Cancer killed at least 2,200 people every day on average in India in 2022, with about 235 deaths related to lung cancer alone, according to the data from the Union Health Ministry.
In the 10-year period starting 2013, 2022 was the deadliest for cancer in India, data shows. Of the 2,200 deaths per day reported in 2022, 320 were from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra (183), West Bengal (172) and Bihar (166).
In 2022, there were 8.08 lakh cancer deaths in India, including 85,221 related to lung cancer, as per the Health Ministry that cited data from the National Cancer Registry Programme Report. Five states — Uttar Pradesh (1.16 lakh), Maharashtra (66,879), West Bengal (62,652), Bihar (60,629) and Tamil Nadu (50,841) — accounted for about 45 per cent of the total cancer deaths in India.
In the 10 years between 2013 and 2022, about 72.52 lakh people have died in India due to cancer — around 2,000 per day and 83 per hour, according to the Health Ministry data, analysed by News18.
Of these 2,000 deaths, half took place collectively in six states — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
There has been a consistent rise in the annual estimated mortality of cancer cases in India. Between 2013 and 2022, the yearly cancer related deaths in India have increased by 25 per cent — from 6.45 lakh to 8.08 lakh.
Of the total 72.52 lakh people killed due to the disease, about half — 36.53 lakh — were reported from six states. Uttar Pradesh (10.52 lakh), Maharashtra (6 lakh), West Bengal (5.63 lakh), Bihar (5.39 lakh), Tamil Nadu (4.53 lakh), and Karnataka (4.42 lakh) have been in the top six positions throughout.
n Uttar Pradesh, per day around 290 people are killed due to cancer followed by Maharashtra (165) and West Bengal (155) between 2013 and 2022.
The Health Ministry also said that there has been a consistent increase in the estimated incidence of cancer cases in India between 2020 and 2022 — from 13.92 lakh to 14.61 lakh.
To control the situation, the ministry said a population-based initiative for prevention, control, and screening for common Non-Communicable Diseases — diabetes, hypertension, and common cancers — has been rolled out in the country. Under the initiative, persons more than 30 years of age are targeted for their screening for three common cancers — cervical, breast and oral. Screening of these common cancers is an integral part of service delivery under Ayushman Arogya Mandir.
“Other initiatives for increasing public awareness about cancer and for promotion of healthy lifestyle includes observation of National Cancer Awareness Day and World Cancer Day and use of print, electronic and social media for community awareness. Furthermore, healthy eating is also promoted through FSSAI. Fit India movement is implemented by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and various Yoga related activities are carried out by the Ministry of AYUSH,” the ministry had said.

Why Personal Accident Insurance?
Life is uncertain & immeasurable. Accidents & uneventful incidents never ring a warning bell before they strike. Road mishaps, and accidents have gone up tremendously & the victims along with their families suffer the consequences of such an unfortunate situation. Alarming statistics report about 1214 road-related death that occurs in India every year; this should be an eye-opener on the perils an individual is exposed to daily.

While minor accidents can cause temporary hurdles, major ones can lead to disability for life or even demise. With a view to providing certain relief, insurance companies have devised various policies that serve as true life savers when met with an unfortunate circumstance.
