ZEN AND THE ART OF PORTFOLIO MAINTENANCE

With starting apologies to Robert Prisig for tweaking his book's title but at the same time dedicating this article to him, i wanted to highlight that investing needs no less Zen attributes than any other mindful pursuit.
After certain important prerequisites have been met, all one has to do is be still , and the grass (portfolio value) grows by itself !!
3 of our important but first-time clients who had entered the Equity market just before the virus infected the markets in April 2020 wanted to book losses and come out when the market was in the ICU. We managed to assuage them ,reminding them that they were in Equity for a preplanned 5 to 7 year investment horizon and the shock at that moment was transitory. They now are prematurely seasoned but happy investors !!
The aforementioned prerequisites are proper asset allocation and choosing schemes with your desired level of risk in Equity , Hybrid and Debt schemes. Your Mutual Fund Distributor/ Financial advisor plays a huge role in you fulfilling these prerequisites.
The word "Portfolio Maintenance" in the title of this post refers to periodic monitoring of the schemes making up the portfolio, dropping the laggards after giving them a fair time to perform, as well as "rebalancing" the portfolio in case the percentages allocated to various assets get skewed due to market performances.
If your portfolio is being maintained as above, all you have to do is cultivate Zen-like attributes by practising Zazen and let the grass (portfolio wealth) grow by itself.
