Is really a poster boy or just a fad (Phatta poster nikla 0).?

In past couple of days, everyone is talking about Zomato's story, let's understand whether it is really worth all the hype!!

- , a loss making entity, has built it's customer base on the basis of deep discounting model. So technically discounts were being funded by VCs.

- For growth, one has to understand the strategies and revenue streams of Zomato as there may not be any visibility on the profits in the next few years.

- Zomato earns revenue from the following:
1) Dineout & Delivery payments 2) Zomato Pro (earlier Zomato Gold) & 3) HyperPure.

- For Dineout & Delivery payments, commissions as high as 30% are being charged to restaurant partners. This has lead to restaurants backing out & opting for various direct delivery apps (like Thrive and Dotpe). Additionally, to join the delivery business, Amazon is charging as low as 10% (currently only in Banglore) this could hamper Zomato's tie up.

- W.r.t Zomato Pro, many restaurant partners have backed out of the plan + there is a over hanging NRAI complaint pending against Zomato before the CCI.

- W.r.t HyperPure, it's a B2B model use to provide ingredients + appliances to restaurant partners. Given the opportunity & no entry barrier, behemoths like Amazon, Reliance or Flipkart may venture into it to taste a pie of the market share.

- As far as strategies/acquisitions are concerned, Zomato has written off its investments made in Urbanspoon, Tonguestun etc and and shut down / exited from its foreign operations.
