In Manipur, many women spend the day running businesses at Ima Keithel, the all-women market, and the night walking the streets with torches.
They are called Meira Paibi.
What began as women protecting their neighbourhoods from alcoholism and violence grew into a larger people’s movement against abuse, fear, and conflict.
For decades, while Manipur has gone through unrest and uncertainty, these women have kept markets running and communities standing.
Some places survive because of the people who refuse to give up.

Two ventures. One pattern.

When began, very few people in the village wanted to join. So the team started with the women — first from the village, then from nearby villages. They showed up consistently, learned the work, and slowly the men started noticing. Over time, they joined in too. Today the whole village collaborates with Krishi Sarathi.

, founded by Subhra, took a similar route in Manipur. It has grown into the state’s largest women-owned startup, run entirely by women. The goal wasn’t just to build one company, but to create many micro-entrepreneurs in villages. Because when women earn, they gain economic agency — and with that, a stronger voice in their homes and communities.

Sometimes change in a community doesn’t start with everyone agreeing.
It starts with a few people working until the rest begin to see the value.

Maheshwar is often spoken about for its looms and its legacy. But spending time here makes you realise that a craft can survive even when the people behind it slowly lose agency.
As the handloom industry grew, design and markets expanded, but many weavers were reduced to wage labour, disconnected from decision-making, learning, and growth. What was once a deeply skilled, creative practice began to resemble an assembly line.
Karghewale uses a different approach, one where sustainability is not just about preserving livelihoods, but about investing in people, skills, and ownership. Where systems are built to support makers, not replace them.
Because when we talk about saving heritage, we’re really talking about the futures of the people who carry it forward.
