FAQs @ PAN 2.0
1. Whether existing PAN card holders will be required to apply for a new PAN under the upgraded system? Do you need to change your PAN number?
Answer: No. Existing PAN card holders are not required to apply for a new PAN under the upgraded system (PAN 2.0).
2. Do I need to change my PAN card under PAN 2.0?
Answer: No. The PAN card will not be changed unless the PAN holders want any updation or correction. Existing valid PAN cards will continue to be valid under PAN 2.0.
3. For people holding more than one PAN, how will you identify and w**d out extra PAN?
Answer: As per the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, no person can hold more than one PAN. If someone holds multiple PANs, they must report it to the jurisdictional assessing officer to get the additional PANs deactivated. Under PAN 2.0, improved system logic for identifying duplicate requests and enhanced central mechanisms will minimize instances of individuals holding multiple PANs.
4. Do people have an option to get corrections done on PAN, like name, spelling, address change, etc., under PAN 2.0?
Answer: Yes, existing PAN holders can make corrections or updates to their PAN details (name, address, mobile number, email, etc.) free of cost under PAN 2.0 after its launch. Until then, Aadhaar-based online facilities are available on the NSDL or UTIISL websites for these updates.
5. A lot of people have not changed their address and are continuing with the old address. How will the new PAN be delivered? By when will the new PAN card get delivered?
Answer: No new PAN card will be delivered unless the PAN holder requests one for updates or corrections. Address updates can be made free of cost using Aadhaar-based facilities on the NSDL or UTIISL websites.
6. If new PAN cards are QR code enabled, will older ones continue to function as they are? What will the QR code help us with?
Answer: QR codes have been part of PAN cards since 2017-18 and will continue under PAN 2.0 with enhancements (dynamic QR codes displaying the latest PAN data). Old PAN cards without QR codes will remain valid, but holders can apply for updated cards with QR codes if desired. QR codes validate PAN details efficiently.
7. What is PAN 2.0?
Answer: PAN 2.0 is an e-governance initiative by the Income Tax Department to re-engineer taxpayer registration services using advanced technology. It consolidates all PAN-related services, including allotment, corrections, and validation, into a unified system. TAN-related services are also integrated, enhancing service quality for users such as banks, financial institutions, and government agencies.
8. How will PAN 2.0 be different from the existing setup?
Answer: PAN 2.0 integrates all PAN/TAN-related services onto a single unified portal, simplifying access and processes such as allotment, validation, corrections, and Aadhaar-PAN linking. The project focuses on online, paperless processes for faster and more secure transactions. Applicants can receive an e-PAN free of cost, while physical PAN cards incur a nominal fee.
