In case a person who is resident in India becomes a non-resident, He/She can continue to hold the securities by converting to a NRO (non-repatriable)Demat Account.
Process of converting Trading & Demat Account from Resident to NRO Status.
Step 1:-Closure of Resident Trading Account.
Step 2:-Open a New NRO & NRO P*S bank account along with NRO P*S Permission.
Step 3:-Open a New Trading and Demat Account in NRO Status.
Step 4:-Closure cm Transfer of Resident Demat Shares to NRO Demat.

In case a person who is resident in India becomes a non-resident,will he/she be required to change the status of his/her holding from Resident to Non-Resident?
As per section 6(5) of FEMA, NRI can continue to hold the securities which he/she had purchased as a resident Indian, even after he/she has become a non resident Indian, on a non-repatriable basis-NRO.

Who is an overseas citizen of India (OCI)?
Under OCI Scheme operational from 02nd Dec 2005 government of India decided to grant overseas citizenship of India (OCI) commonly known as “dual citizenship”. A foreign national, who was eligible to become a citizen of India on 26.01.1950 or was a citizen of India on or at anytime after 26.01.1950 or belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947 and his/her children and grand children, provided his/her country of citizenship allows dual citizenship in some form or other under
the local laws, is eligible for registration as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Minor children of such person are also eligible for OCI. However, if the applicant had ever been a citizen of Pakistan or Bangladesh, he/she will not be eligible for OCI.

How can NRIs invest in shares in India?
As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, NRI who wishes to invest in shares in India through a stock exchange need to approach the designated branch of any authorized dealer (bank) authorized by reserve bank to administer the P*S (Portfolio Investment Scheme) to open a NRE (Non Resident External) /NRO (Non Resident Ordinary) account under the scheme for routing Investments.

What are the different between NRI and PIO?

A Non Resident Indian (NRI) is a person resident outside India, who is a citizen of India or is a person of Indian origin.

A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) for this purpose is defined in Regulation 2 of FEMA Notification ibid as a citizen of any country other than Bangladesh or Pakistan, if (a) he at any time held Indian passport; or (b) he or either of his parents or any of his grandparents was a citizen of India by virtue of the Constitution of India or the Citizenship Act, 1955 (57 of 1955); or (c) the person is a spouse of an Indian citizen or a person referred to in sub-clause (a) or (b).
