The main USP of the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), apart from safety and high returns (compared to other fixed options such as PPF, FD), is that it has exempt-exempt-exempt tax status. That is, it is exempted from tax at the time of maturity. Further, contributions to EPF and the interest received on the EPF contributions are exempted from tax as well, subject to certain conditions. However, did you know that there are certain instances when EPF can become taxable?

That is right, for instance, the employer's contribution to the EPF account can become taxable if it exceeds a certain limit in a financial year. There are few more such instances when you will have to pay tax on EPF.
As per current law, an employee's own contribution to the EPF account is not taxable. However, effective from April 1, 2020, onwards, employer's contribution to the EPF account can become taxable if it exceeds Rs 7.5 lakh in a financial year.

But there are some exemptions also:
if the employee is not in the job for two months the withdrawal of that money is not taxable.
also in case of marriage, emergency, and other contingent.

National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India (petitioner) filed a plea in the Delhi Court against the Companies who are misbranding the Beverages/ plant-based product as "Milk".

The Petitioner is represented by the Ciccu Mukhopadhaya with other advocates.

why this is in news:

Soya milk and Almond milk are extracted through the Plants
but Milk is not a plant-oriented product. According to the Food safety act 2006 and its allied regulations prevent the use of the word “milk” and other dairy terms like ‘paneer’, ‘curd’(Dahi), ‘yoghurt’ for any plant-based food/extracts as these do not qualify as milk, milk product or composite milk product. so this extracts thereby assuming a wholly distinct and dissimilar nature and composition to that of animal milk.

the Delhi High of delhi issue notice to the entities i.e. Harsey India, Sofit, Epigamia, Urban platter who are using the word "milk" in the Plant or Beverage Oriented product.
the FSSAI is the Party under this Plea.

Case Name: National Cooperative Dairy Federation of India vs FSSAI & ors.

So stay tuned for the next hearing on September 14.
