Rajasthan Farmer Subsidy Schemes: Water Security & Crop Protection
With over 60% of its land arid or semi-arid, Rajasthan's agricultural policy has prioritized water security, mechanization and crop protection for its farmers. Here's a rundown of the key subsidy schemes available:
PM-KUSUM Solar Pump Scheme
Farmers can avail a combined 90% subsidy (60% Central + 30% State) on solar water pumps. For a 5 HP pump costing ₹3,00,000, a farmer pays just ₹30,000 — eliminating an annual diesel cost of ₹60,000-80,000 and delivering a return on investment in under 6 months. This has been especially transformative for irrigation in desert regions like Barmer and Jaisalmer.
Diggi Farm Pond Scheme
A subsidy of ₹3,40,000 is available for constructing a 1,200 cubic meter farm pond (Diggi) with HDPE geomembrane lining. A Diggi stores monsoon water and can irrigate 2-3 acres through the dry season — a major water-security boost for districts like Jodhpur and Bikaner.
Wire Fencing (Tarbandi) Yojana
To protect crops from stray animals and nilgai, farmers can get a 70% subsidy (up to ₹48,000) for fencing 400 meters of farm perimeter. Since animal-led crop destruction accounts for 15-25% of yield loss in border districts, this is a critical safeguard — Nilgai alone destroy 20-30% of standing crops annually in some areas. When combined with solar fencing, crop loss can drop to under 2%.
Underground Pipeline System
A 60% subsidy is available for underground PVC piping to carry water from source to field, cutting evaporation and seepage losses and improving irrigation efficiency by around 30% compared to open channels.
Horticulture Mission — Orchard Subsidy
The Rajasthan Horticulture Mission offers up to 75% subsidy for establishing Pomegranate, Ber and Lemon orchards in selected districts.
