Definition : Gold is the oldest precious metal which has been valued as international
currency, a commodity, an investment or simply an object of beauty for thousands of years.
Bullion mainly refers to gold, silver, or some other precious metals used in bulk ie in the
form of bars or ingots rather than in coins. Central banks use gold bullion in the settlement
of international debt. Bullion's value is determined by its purity and weight. Bullion market is
a place where these precious metals can be bought and sold in bulk quantity. The modern
day bullion market allows small, individual investors, all the way up to large institutions, to
easily buy and sell precious metals.
Explanation : Bullion market mainly consists of two types of players. The first is the
manufacturer of various products which require precious metals as inputs while the second
is the speculator/investor. The first type of customers includes jewellers and other
companies who participate in the bullion market to ensure steady supply of precious metals
for consumption at their manufacturing units. The second type of customers buy precious
metals more as a hedge against inflation or for speculative purpos. The first type is
interested in physical delivery of precious metal for consumption whereas the second type
is more interested in the price change and gains arising out of it.
