For years, the idea of retiring debt-free has been treated as the gold standard of financial planning.

But what happens when home loans now stretch over 25–30 years, and people buy homes later than ever before? Does carrying an EMI into retirement automatically mean you’ve made a financial mistake?

This question was recently explored by The Economic Times, where our Founder, Kundan Shahi, shared his perspective on the changing realities of personal finance.

As Kundan puts it:

“Retiring debt-free is an ideal financial goal, but it isn’t the only indicator of financial preparedness.”

His perspective shifts the focus from whether you have an EMI to whether you can comfortably sustain it.

If your repayments are supported by reliable post-retirement income, such as a pension, annuity, rental income, or a well-planned retirement corpus and they don’t come at the cost of healthcare, essential living expenses, or emergency savings, an outstanding home loan doesn’t necessarily compromise retirement.

At the same time, he emphasizes that while a reasonably priced home loan may be manageable, high-interest unsecured debt like personal loans and credit card dues should never become part of a retirement plan.

As borrowing patterns evolve, so should the way we think about financial readiness.

That vacation hits different when your debt comes along. 😭💸

Every trip.
Every outing.

Every “treat yourself” moment.....there’s always that little voice reminding you about the next EMI.

Money stress has a way of showing up where it wasn’t invited.

Maybe it’s time to stop letting debt decide your plans.

What’s one thing you’d do if money stress wasn’t tagging along? 👇

That one unknown number has a personality 📞💀

You don’t answer.

You just stare at the screen...
“Loan?”
“Insurance?”
“Credit card?”
“Spam?”

And somehow... you’re right more often than not. 😭

If you’ve ever let an unknown call ring just to avoid the conversation, welcome to the club.

Your salary didn’t ghost you. 💸

It just had other commitments.

Rent.
EMIs.
Bills.
Subscriptions you forgot to cancel.

By the time you blink, payday starts feeling like a distant memory.

Adulting wasn’t in the job description. 😭

What’s the first thing your salary pays for every month? 👇

The heaviest part of debt isn’t always the EMI.

It’s the constant stress.
The sleepless nights.
The fear of unknown calls.
The feeling that your finances are controlling your life.

If debt has started affecting your peace of mind, it’s time to explore your options—not ignore them.

A financial burden shouldn’t become a mental one.
