Homebound with a bad cold this weekend, I am devouring my kindle. This morning, I clicked on City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi, by William Dalrymple, a book I’ve been meaning to read since moving here. The first line hooked me: “It was in the citadel of Feroz Shah Kotla that I met my first Sufi.”

photos & a brief write up on our walk at Kotla. Thanks everyone for joining in!

A city of Djinns, is it?

A lot of Delhi’s history is made popular by William Dalrymple’s book City of Djinns. The title refers to the djinns believed to inhabit the ruins of Kotla Firuz Shah, just off Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. The author, during his travels, meets a pir here, who talks of the Delhi rising from its ashes again & again; the city, he says, is never abandoned because the djinns love it so! Many people have heard of the book, a lesser number have read it & very few actually know of the association between the ruins & djinns. Actually djinns are relatively recent occupants of the citadel.

In the 14th century, the Tughluq king, Firuz Shah, built a new capital city for himself, along the banks of the Yamuna & called it Firuzabad. It is believed to have been almost twice the size of Shahjahanabad extending from Pir Ghaib in the northern Ridge to Hauz Khas in the south. Today only the inner citadel of this massive city survives, known by the name Kotla Firuz Shah.
