While improving your credit score might seem like a daunting task, if approached in a systematic and planned manner it is not really so. What it does take however is discipline and a fair bit of patience. Let’s first understand what the credit score is all about, so that we can look at ways to improve it. You should know that not only is it possible to improve a score if you are currently struggling with a low score, but given time you can pull it up significantly, so that your financial fitness is not adversely impacted.
A credit score is typically between 300 and 900, with 750 or there abouts considered to be a good score. By good, most banks and financial institutions would be willing to look favourably at a loan or credit card application by someone with a score in that range. As per data generated by CIBIL, one of India’s four credit bureaus, nearly 79 percent of loans that are sanctioned are to those with individuals with a similar score.
With the increased use of credit reports in areas beyond just financial services,including phone operators and employers, credit fitness has assumed an important role today globally. As per an exhaustive credit health survey conducted by Credit Sudhaar in 2013, however, India as of now has a long way to go, with less than 15 percent of survey respondents being aware of what a bureau is.
