Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi

Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi Chandni Chowk is the major street in the walled city of Old Delhi, which was originally called Shahjahanabad. It was initially divided into three sections:

1.

Chandini Chowk originally meaning moonlit square or market, Built in 17th century by the great Muslim Emperor of India,Shah Jahan and designed by his daughter Jahan Ara, the market was once divided by canals to reflect moonlight. The walled city, which includes the Lal Qila or Red Fort of Delhi, was established in 1650 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was designed by his daughter Jahanara B

egum Sahib, who also made significant contributions in the landscaping of her father's new capital. Chandni Chowk runs through the middle of the walled city, from the Lahori Darwaza (Lahore Gate) of the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid. Originally, a canal ran through the middle of the street as a part of the water supply scheme. Lahori darwaza to Chowk Kotwali (near Gurdwara Shish Ganj): This section closest to the imperial residence, was called Urdu Bazar, i.e., the encampment market. The language Urdu got its name from this encampment. Ghalib noted the destruction of this market during the disturbances of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and its aftermath.

2. Chowk Kotwali to Chandni Chowk: The term Chandni Chowk originally referred to the square that initially had a reflecting pool. It was replaced by a clock-tower (Ghantaghar) that was damaged and demolished in the 1960s.[3][4] This section was originally called Johri Bazar.

3. 'Chandni Chowk' to Fatehpuri Masjid: This was called the Fatehpuri Bazar. It is said that moonlight reflecting on its canal, earned it its name, Chandni (Moonlit). The Mughal imperial processions used to pass through Chandni Chowk. The tradition was continued when Delhi Durbar was held in 1903.

Shiv Mishthan Bhandar, Kucha Ghasi Ram, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi

Since 1910, Shiv Mishthan Bhandar started by Shri Mohar Singh Yadav has been a trusted name. Located in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi, this place offers pure Desi Ghee sweets & varied snacks besides breakfast & lunch items. Try the flavourful bedmis of Shiv Misthan Bhandar, the good old eatery in the bustling Chandni Chowk.

Desi Ghee bedami pooris with aloo, nagori pooris with halwa & chholey Bhature the traditional way super enjoyable till the time u start thinking calories.

Think bedmi, and you think of Shiv Misthan Bhandar. This is an old shop on the mouth of Kucha Ghasiram. The shop has just 11 items on the menu.

If you are there in the mornings, you can breakfast on nagori halwa (₹60), a delicious dish of small puris which you pierce in the middle (the way golgappas come) and stuff with halwa and eat. Apart from bedmi aloo (₹90), they have chholey bhaturey (₹80), and kachori and samosa (₹50). They sell six kinds of sweets – jalebi and imarti (₹500 a kilo), gulab jamun (₹450), suji halwa (₹400), mung dal halwa (₹450) and malpua (₹400). You can also buy them by plate – two imartis, for instance, are for ₹60 and two pieces of jalebi for ₹50.

The best thing about Shiv Misthan Bhandar is that every dish is cooked in desi ghee. And because there are only 11 items on the menu (unlike the big vegetarian fast food chains, where you get everything these days from pizzas and pasta to noodles and burgers and bhatureys and chaat), Shiv Misthan keeps a strict check on quality.

The place is known for its chholey bhaturey and imartis, too. Shiv Misthan’s jalebi is juicy, yet crisp. And it’s delicious when eaten hot, just off the kadai.

Another Bollywood movie starring Irrfan Khan coming from the locations of Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi

Irrfan to play Punjabi businessman from Chandni Chowk in movie ‘Hindi Medium’

Irrfan Khan’s next, Hindi Medium, will show him in an unusual avatar. The actor will be seen playing a rich Punjabi businessman and clothes store owner from Chandni Chowk who is married to Saba Qamar.

The film was shot on real locations like Chandni Chowk and other parts of Old Delhi to keep things authentic. Irrfan met with and recorded clips of shopkeepers and salesmen while they went about their daily business to prepare for his role.

The idea was to capture the essence of affluent Chandni Chowk residents who are known to favour flashy things, so the actor will be seen sporting leather jackets and jhatak clothes.

Interestingly, the people that are shown working in Irrfan’s store were selected from real shops.

Hindi Medium is a light hearted romantic film about a young couple in Chandni Chowk in Delhi, who aspire to move into society’s upper crust.
