The RBI is using another tool to manage surplus liquidity in the banking system.
It has announced open-market sales of government securities worth ₹1 lakh crore in three tranches this month. The move comes after VRRR auctions were not absorbing enough of the excess liquidity.
Why does the RBI want to absorb liquidity?
When there is a large amount of surplus money in the banking system, short-term market rates can come under downward pressure. Managing liquidity helps the RBI keep financial conditions closer to its intended monetary stance.
For individuals, this isn't something you'll see directly on your bank statement.
But liquidity conditions can eventually influence things like:
FD rates
Bond yields
Money-market returns
Loan pricing
A small-looking RBI operation can therefore have a much wider impact across the financial system.
