The idea of pooling money for investment isn’t new. In 1774, Adriaan van Ketwich launched Eendragt Maakt Magt (“Unity Creates Strength”) in the Netherlands.
Its purpose? To let ordinary savers spread their risks by investing collectively in bonds issued by different European nations. This marked the birth of the mutual fund concept.
 
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 – 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧, 1924
The U.S. saw its first mutual fund in 1924 with the creation of the Massachusetts Investors Trust.
What set it apart was its open-ended structure: investors could buy in or redeem shares at daily valuations. These features namely 𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚, 𝒅𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 became the defining traits of modern mutual funds

ITUS Capital: Quarterly Review January – March 2023

The first quarter of 2023 (January – March 2023) saw the fund deliver a return of –3.91%, as against Nifty, which had a return of -4.12% over the same period.

Overall, our portfolio fundamentals continue to be strong, with
• Revenue (YoY) at 17.6%
• PAT (YoY) at 28.5%
• Gross Margin at the portfolio level is 59% (over a rolling 4Q basis) and has increased from 55% over the last three years.
• Cash flow growth of the portfolio over the last 1Y is at 24.5% and the last 3Y CAGR is at 22.2%.

Portfolio Performance and Attribution: Our fund has delivered an IRR (Annualized) of 18.2% (Jan 17 – Mar 2023) as against Nifty’s IRR (Annualized) of 12.8% over the same period.

We maintain that 2023 would be a great year to deploy capital on a purely bottoms-up basis into volatility that we see in the year.
