Let us first understand what is “Hospital Cash Benefit”. Then we will understand how they can be availed by an individual.

Hospital Cash Benefit - It is a payment made to the policyholder for every day of hospitalisation. It is not in anyway related to the actual expenses incurred in the hospital. For example, you will get Rs. 1,000 to 5000 for every day that you are hospitalised. Depending on the plan, the amounts could be higher also. You could also receive a higher amount in case you are admitted in the ICU.Or another amount in case of hospitalisation due to accident. You will still need a health insurance plan to take care of the medical fees which you will incur for the treatment.

Now Hospital Cash Benefit may be offered as a stand-alone plan, as part of a health insurance plan or as an optional rider in some plans.

So a stand-alone Hospital Cash Benefit Plan will typically have these features:
Daily Cash Benefit of Rs. 3,000 for every day of hospitalisation
Daily Cash Benefit of Rs. 5,000 for every day of ICU hospitalisation
Maximum coverage of 30-60 days in a year

Critical Illness Insurance

A critical illness policy covers life-threatening diseases such as cancer of specified severity, kidney failure, stroke, paralysis, etc. The cost of treatment for such conditions is quite high, and it may require multiple hospital visits over a long period. Apart from hospitalization, there are various other expenses, including doctor visits, chemotherapy, etc. The sum insured amount is paid in a lump sum that can be used to cover all the medical costs.

However, the total number of illnesses that are covered are specified at the time of policy purchase. It also offers compensation for loss of income in case of a diagnosis of any life-threatening health condition.
Critical illness insurance provides additional coverage for medical emergencies like heart attack, stroke, or cancer. Because these emergencies or illnesses often incur greater than average medical costs, these policies pay out cash to help cover those overruns where traditional health insurance may fall short.
