The Lightning Network (LN) is a Layer-2 payment channel network anchored to the Bitcoin protocol. It intends to increase the network’s throughput while decreasing transaction settlement time.

🦩 Despite BTC dropping 57% over the past year, Lightning channel and node counts have grown steadily, increasing 24% and 14% year on year.

🦩 The bitcoin capacity held in public channels on the LN reached a new high of 4,618 bitcoin valued at $93 million.

🦩 The combination of the increase in adoption and integrations led to capacity drastically increasing by 96% in the past year.

🦩 Cash App, Robinhood, Kraken are some of the companies that have adopted the lightening network recently.

🦩 This growth indicates that the lightening is moving away from a hobbyist network towards being a mature financial payment network.

🦩 As of Q3, 2022, the average fee per transaction was only $1.4, down 21% for the quarter and 55% for this year.

🦩 The last fee spike occurred in early 2021 when bitcoin’s price made new highs.

🦩 Typically during bull runs, network users are more than willing to pay higher fees to make sure their transactions are included in the block as early as possible.

So The merge happened earlier this month, what were the biggest risks going in ?

🦩 Proof of Work Fork:
A group of Ethereum miners is preparing a hard fork called ETHW. They’ll claim to be the original chain which could confuse holders and validators.

🦩 Replay Attacks:
These allow for transactions or messages signed on one chain to be “replayed” on another chain. The only way to fall victim to a replay attack is to interact with forked networks or airdropped tokens.

🦩 Validators not complying:
just under 30% of validators went offline after the Sepolia Merge and 9% of validators didn’t update their clients for the Bellatrix testnet. If there was a threat to the merge on day zero, it would’ve been these guys.

🦩 ETH Loans:
People borrowed ethereum at rates never seen before I order to get the proof of work ($ETHW) airdrop. If people defaulted on their loans, this could have cause a massive ripple effect.

These are the significant metric changes expected post Ethereum’s much awaited Merge 👇🏻

🦩 Ethereum Inflation rate will reduce from 4.62% (currently) to 0.49% (based on ETH staked). This works out to be a 90% reduction in issuance of Ethereum.

🦩 Slots for transactions will occur every 12 seconds (currently 13.3 seconds), this will result in transaction time improving a little under 10%

🦩 Reduction of energy usage by 99.95%
