𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

By January 2026, India had commissioned 132 CBG plants with capacity of ~920 tonnes/day. While this is still far from the SATAT target of 5,000 plants by 2030, momentum is clearly building.
The biggest shift is the government’s phased CBG blending mandate starting FY26. Mandatory blending creates long-term demand visibility and strengthens the economics of the sector.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰:
* Reduce crude oil & LNG imports
* Convert waste into fuel
* Support rural income
* Improve waste management

But the real challenge is ex*****on.
India has enough agricultural and organic waste. The bottleneck is efficient collection, aggregation, storage and logistics. Companies with strong feedstock supply chains may emerge as long-term winners.

The sector is now expanding beyond traditional biogas into biomethane, cleaner transport fuels and broader energy-transition opportunities.

India’s biogas success will ultimately depend less on announcements and more on consistent ground-level ex*****on.
