SEAI's new report published on May 19th highlighted that electrification is the future of Ireland's heating systems.

Currently, we are roughly 90% reliant on fossil fuels for home heating. SEAI's findings identified that electricity and ambient heat are projected to supply up to 72% of final heat demand by 2055.

A Shorter Shower Saves More Than You Think

Heating water is one of the biggest energy costs in any home. In some homes, it accounts for nearly half the electricity bill.

A standard electric shower running for 10 minutes uses roughly the same energy as leaving a 80-watt light bulb on for an entire day. Cut that shower by just 2 minutes and you’re making a saving every single time.

A few practical changes:

1. If you have an electric shower, use it instead of running a bath. A 5-minute shower uses roughly 40 litres of water. A bath uses 80 litres or more. That’s double the hot water.
2. If you have an immersion heater, try to only switch it on when you need hot water, and for the shortest time you can. A timer helps with this.
None of this costs a cent. Just a small shift in your routine.

Up to 30% of your home’s heat can escape through the roof. If your attic has thin, patchy, or compressed insulation, you’re paying to heat the sky, not your home.

Many older Irish homes fall well below current insulation standards. The current recommended standard is 300mm. That’s a big gap, and it’s costing you real money. For a home spending €2,500 a year on heating, poor attic insulation could mean anywhere up to €750 of heat loss through the ceiling.

Attic insulation is one of the cheapest and quickest upgrades you can do, and the SEAI grants went up earlier this year for attic insulation.

We are alerting members to a recent sophisticated fraud attempt involving a text message and phone call scam (vishing).

A member was contacted by text and then phone, where fraudsters posed as Credit Union security staff. They used convincing tactics, including staying on the line while attempting to gain access to the member’s account and requesting One-Time Passcodes (OTPCs).

Thanks to quick action by Credit Union staff, further losses were prevented and funds were successfully protected.

Please remember:

• We will NEVER ask you to share One-Time Passcodes (OTPCs)
• Do not follow instructions from unexpected calls or text messages
• Always independently verify any security concerns using official contact details

Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, including the use of spoofed messages and AI-generated voices. Stay vigilant and trust your instincts — if something doesn’t feel right, hang up and contact us directly.
