The scene for Luke Skywalker’s island retreat in the Star Wars films, Skelling Michael is an extraordinary place. It was also used as a location in the Harry Potter films. Local tours take visitors on boat trips around the island showcasing its stunning beauty.

Another great reason to holiday in Ireland this year!

Located on the Skellig Coast in the Southern Peninsulas of the Wild Atlantic Way, and beside the Ring of Kerry, Valentia Island boasts some of Ireland's most stunning scenery.

As restrictions ease and more and more people are vaccinated our thoughts inexorably turn to getting a summer break. Well you could do worse than plan a Staycation. But where do you start?

The Wild Atlantic Way

It’s amazing how many Irish people have never enjoyed the fantastic variety of experiences to be had on an Irish Staycation.
We don’t just boast some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Our country is also awash with activities that are only a car drive away.
So why not consider a trip along the Wild Atlantic Way this summer. You can experience up to 2,500 kilometres of beautiful coastline all the way from Donegal to West Cork.
Stop off for a day, here and there, as you travel and enjoy a wide variety of local activities and amenities.
You can either plan ahead or take it as it comes. Either way there is something for everyone.
For the more adventurous, there is Scuba diving in the beautiful clear water of the Atlantic ocean, or kayaking along the coast. Why not try deep sea fishing; a good mountain hike; or an orienteering adventure. Maybe a day’s cycling takes your fancy.
If you prefer something a little less strenuous, you can take leisurely strolls along some of the most beautiful and scenic walks in the world. Or you can visit any number of historical and ancient sights and monuments.
Something for the kids? What about pony trekking, picnics on the beach or maybe a boat trip.
And while you are at it, you can enjoy great cuisine including beautifully prepared fish from the sea straight to your table.

Our Number one tip to make your Staycation holiday memorable

Do your research!
When preparing for holidays abroad, we tend to do our research on our destination.
Where are the best places to eat? How close are we to local amenities? What kind of nightlife is there?
Strangely, we don’t tend to do that for staycations. But we should. A staycation is all the more fun if you have done a little preparation by researching the location you are planning to visit.
Before you commit to your booking, it’s always worth using google maps to check out where your accommodation is in relation to the beach, eateries etc.
Research the area to see what amenities are available. Whether it’s pony trekking, deep sea fishing or golf, it’s better to know in advance of your arrival what’s available and what’s not. Many of Ireland’s staycation hotspots have summer festivals and these are usually great fun for all ages.
Particularly, if you are going on a family staycation, you want to make sure there is something to do on those all too rainy days. Knowing that there is somewhere to go to spend a few hours out of the rain, but away from your accommodation, will help keep adults and kids sane while you wait for the weather to change.
Furthermore, when you arrive you can get into holiday spirit all the faster if you have a plan for day one.
