Saveable Income Vs Disposable Income

Did you know that disposable income is a phrase that was invented by a marketing executive in 1950. Why? Because if you view your surplus income as disposable you will dispose of it. This will result in more sales – more revenue.

However can you imagine the huge different that would happen if you changed your mindset to saveable income. You would spend less, save more. Retire early and avoid borrowing.

The graph below elaborates this point, but more importantly it demonstrates that by concentrating and reviewing your income. It will increase. The same with expenses. Spend time analysing you’re expenses and they will have to drop. Thus creating the saveable funds that you want to spend your hard earned money on and without borrowing.

Savings - A route to Stress Free Living. When you save, you have the following positive effects

1 - Your savings get the full benefit of compound interest. Your money is making money.

2 - Borrow less, therefore you are not giving away the aforementioned Compound Interest.

3 - You spend less. When you save you realise how hard it is to do and hence are more cautious with your money.

4 - Fully aware of the value of a Euro and the effort and time it takes to accumulate.

5 - Greater sense of Security as you have money to "back you up" if a large or small disaster arrives unexpectedly.

6 - Sleep better - because of greater security

7 - Remove Financial strees in your relationships.

Action - Take it now and set up a structured savings scheme. By structured I mean a regular direct debit that leaves your bank A/C every month. The Savings are made first from the top of your pay cheque. If you try saving from "whats left at the end of the month" you are wasting your time.

Sean Lynch of Qifa Financial Planners recently gave a series of lectures to the TY students of Davis College

The lectures ran for four weeks and centred around getting good financial habits for young people.

The students learned a lot about the benefits of savings, planning for the future, the cost of debt in monetary terms and health terms. Hopefully they will take these financial habits into their adult life.
