After the warmest spell of the year so far, the return of rain lastweek changes grass management on farm. Teagasc Grass10's target pre-grazing yield remains 1,300–1,400kg DM/ha but after a dry spell followed by rain, covers can vary from paddock to paddock.
What to prioritise this week according:
1. Before making any grazing decisions, walk the farm and know it's current state
2. Prioritise controlling grass covers
3. Rest rain-softened paddocks this week; poaching now costs you weeks of grass growth
4. Recheck water troughs as dehydrated cows will be reflected in milk yield
As Teagasc Grass10 has consistently noted, every extra 1kg DM of grass eaten per cow per day over the season is worth €120/cow in additional profit. Managing this transition well protects that return.
