Gormanston College is steeped in history, home to acres of green-space, the stunning ’Yew Walk’ and the Delvin river. Before 2013 the College grounds, par 3 golf course, tennis courts, handball alleys and playing fields were all open to the public.

As students we spent days figuring out how to breakout, now the opposite is true for past pupils. Perhaps there is a better way forward.

The Cloisters at Gormanston College. It is said that one of the daughters from the Preston family, the original owners of the castle, was considering becoming a nun. In an effort to persuade her to stay home, he had the cloisters planted to create a feature of a convent so she could walk through them. The cloisters are in fact part of three tunnels of trees that form a continuous loop. For past pupils, you can now visit without risking 8 black marks!

As a new chapter in the annals of Gormanston College history is made this month, with the announcement by the Trustees that the school will turn public, let us remind ourselves that the school and the grounds have consistently evolved for the better over the past 700 years. Below are 7 key dates in it's history;

- 14th Century: Gormanston Castle becomes the seat of the Preston family (the Viscount Gormanston)

- 1786: the castle now standing was built on the site of an earlier estate by the Prestons.

- Late 1940s: The grounds and castle are sold to the Franciscan Order of Friars.

- Early 1950s: The castle grounds were developed with the building of a boys' secondary school adjacent to the castle.

- 1955: The Franciscans open the college for boarders and day pupils

- 1988: Girls admitted to the school for the first time

- 2014: Gormanston announces it will become a public school

As the college begins on its new journey, and educates a whole host of new students who will become accomplished statesmen, writers, actors, sportsmen and great contributors to society at large- we are certain that the collage ethos will remain. Dei Gloriae, Hiberniae Honori

The Top 10 Enigmatic Places to See in Your Lifetime - Number 10 is The Cloisters at Gormanston College.

Inside story not in this piece: It is rumored that upon hearing that his daughter wanted to leave the family estate to become a nun, the then Viscount of Gormanston in a bid to keep her at home, planted the tree formation to resemble cloisters in a monastery.

Gormanston College, not just a boarding school. When the castle was owned by the Preston family, it is said that when the head of the house died, the foxes left the surrounding countryside and congregated at the door of the castle. Many testify to have seen this phenomenon happen in recent years, and so the story of the ‘foxes of Gormanston’ lives on.
