Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture

Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture Galway was the European Capital of Culture in 2020.

Galway was the European Capital of Culture in 2020.

Galway’s special year was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 global pandemic. Whilst many amazing events were held in 2019 and early 2020, unfortunately, we were not able to host all of the cultural events that we had planned for the year. However, despite the challenges of the pandemic Galway’s artists, cultural organisations and local communities still delivered a large, diverse and truly in

novative programme of both in-person and online events. This is an important body of work that Galway can continue to build on. www.galway2020.ie

Next Tuesday, 30 November, Sarah Fuller & Manuela Corbari will be discussing their beautiful project: “A Bird at My Window and Other Stories” at Arts + Health - Checking In 2021. 🌼

A Bird at My Window and Other Stories was a magical and thought-provoking response to an Italian children’s book developed during a residency with Saolta Arts at University Hospital Galway. Transforming the bedsides of young patients into miniature theatre spaces, Sarah Fuller and Manuela Corbari shared an enchanting collection of stories where the natural and human worlds were intertwined. 🐦

The project was part of “The Deepest Shade of Green” programme, developed by Saolta Arts for Galway 2020. 🌿

This is just incredible. 💜

Congratulations to everyone who contributed in any way to make this beautiful sculpture which used traditional techniques of bobbin lacemaking, dating back to the 1750s.

Special shout-out to the amazing team at the Headford Lace Project, Róisín de Buitléar and Jackie Magnin.

A new lace sculpture celebrating the revival of lacemaking in Headford will be installed in St George’s Square, Headford beginning tomorrow, Friday November 12 and continuing for several days.

Commissioned by Headford Lace Project, ‘Lace Matrix’ by Róisín de Buitléar is funded by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture under the Small Towns Big Ideas programme.

Like the young Headford lacemakers of the 1840s, the giant lace piece will be made using bobbin lace techniques with 2km of cord. It is estimated that it will take members of the Headford Lace Project community and the artist three to five days to complete using a platform to allow access to the two metre high frame and will be first ever project of its kind in Ireland.

Well done to all the team at Headford Lace Project who have worked so hard to bring this project to life 👏
