Time for this storm to be taken seriously, no more hype and over reaction. It is likely to cause widespread damage, take the necessary measures to protect yourselves and your property.

OPHELIA UPDATE 7.30PM SUNDAY:

With each passing hour the confidence and accuracy of the storm forecasts increase. I'm not at base at the moment, so I'm only getting a quick look at the models. It's not good!

You will recall me saying over the past three days that there's been a slow drift east in the track forecasts. Unfortunately the latest spaghetti model (attached) is showing the storm even further east. This means we've even less chance now of avoiding it. It also means we are closer to the severe winds near the storm centre. On the other hand the storm will cross over more land than previously expected and will weaken more. What does all this mean? Overall (and I don't want to scare people) it makes our already bad situation even worse. I'm expecting gusts of 115mph mid to late afternoon Monday.

Just reading the last line of the National Hurricane Centre and Met Eireanns latest statement makes scary reading .. “Preparations to protect lives and property should be taken today if possible.” I would not be surprised if red warnings are issued for our area .. I said last night it must be a close call and it's closer now.

Will update again later.

It was a very stormy night, and a lot of wind damage evident. Insurance companies will be inundated with storm claims, and it may be several days before they can inspect damaged properties. Strong winds not expected to die down until later this afternoon. Some tips.
1-Photograph damage.
2-Carry out temporary emergency repairs, when storm has passed.
3-Notify insurance company asap.
4-Most policies do not cover storm damage to trees, gates, fences and hedges. But will cover damage caused by fallen trees.
5- Be safe
