Imagine having the misfortune to suffer a loss as a result of damage to your property. Now imagine being informed by your insurance company that you are not going to receive the full reinstatement cost associated with this damage because your property is not insured adequately.

Many people encounter this exact scenario after they submit a claim under their home or business insurance policy. The findings of recent research has been published by the Central Bank and it appears that as many as 1 in 6 households have underinsured their home.

Most household policies sold in Ireland include an average clause. This means that you are responsible for the portion of underinsurance. An example of this would be a fire damage claim being valued at €100k but the insurer only paying €70k in settlement as a result of the property being 30% underinsured.

The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland has a very handy house rebuild calculator which can be used to calculate the minimum reinstatement value of a house. This can be found here:
https://scsi.ie/consumer/build/calculator/

As this is such a common problem in recent times and as a result of the financial pressures on homeowners caused by other external factors, the Central Bank has written to insurance companies instructing them to do more to help consumers with this issue. Details on this can be seen here:

Darcy Doyle Loss Assessors Ltd are experts in these matters. If you think that you might be underinsured or have no idea and need some advice then don't hesitate to call us on 01 690 2007 or email [email protected].

The Central Bank has now written to all insurance companies warning them of how exposed their customers are to having insufficient insurance cover in place.

Hi folks,

We hope that everyone is keeping safe and managing as best that can be expected in the current unfortunate circumstances that we have found ourselves in.

Since the lockdown started we have seen an increase in both business interruption claims and fire damage claims.

Businesses which have ceased to trade or suffered a significant drop off in trading levels as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic have been in touch with us. We have been able to review policy cover, provide advice in relation to same, and liaise with insurers in respect of their claims. Unfortunately, not all policies provide cover for the losses that have been suffered but for those that do and also for those where there is a "grey area" or the policy cover is not specific we are engaging with insurers. If you have suffered a loss and would like us to review your cover then contact us on the number or email address at the bottom of this post.

Fires are another peril which we have seen an increase in over the recent weeks. With so many people permanently at home, some electrical installations and appliances have been struggling to cope with the additional loading they have been placed under. We have seen fires from appliances, electrical circuitry and as a result of accidental damage. We also note the very unfortunate forest fire in the Carlingford peninsula which fire fighters have been bravely battling over the past few days. Many homes in the area have been affected as a result of the large volume of smoke in the area.

We would recommend to not overload sockets, turn off switches when appliances are not in use, try not to run multiple appliances concurrently, do not leave phones, tablets, smart watches, etc plugged in and unattended and never put on your dishwasher, washing machine or drier at night or when leaving the home.

If your property is in the vicinity of a fire then be sure to close all windows and doors until the fire has been extinguished and the resultant smoke has dissipated.

If you have suffered a loss or damage to your business or property as result of the Covid-19 pandemic, fires, or any other peril which insurance policies cover (pipe leak, oil damage, break-in, theft, etc.) then don't hesitate to contact us on 01 690 2007 or email [email protected].

We are on hand to provide advice and, if necessary, handle your claim with your insurer on your behalf.

The blaze broke out in the Rockmarshall area yesterday afternoon.

It's getting a bit windy out there on the east coast now. While the winds over this side of the country might not be as bad as out west, storm damage can still occur as a result of the strong gusts that are forecast.

Storm damage to properties typically involves roof coverings being dislodged, cracked or even partially / completely blown off. This can and often leads to internal water damage if the storm force winds are accompanied or followed by rainfall. Sometimes, storm damage can have previously been caused to the roof of a property but it might not be until a period of very heavy rainfall some time afterwards that the damage is discovered.

If you do have the misfortune to suffer this type of damage to your property, then please don't hesitate to give us a call on 01 690 2007 or email [email protected]. Our expert Loss Assessors are readily available to handle your claim and negotiate with your insurer for your full entitlement under the terms of your insurance policy. We cover nationwide and operate on a no win, no fee basis.

Stay safe everyone and pay attention to the weather warnings.
