Passing on a family business starts with two difficult questions: does the next generation genuinely want to run it, and can you afford to hand it over without weakening your own retirement?
A son or daughter may say yes because they feel responsible, not because ownership suits the life they want. If the business represents most of your wealth, an early handover can also shift your own financial security with it.
Tax reliefs may help, but they should sit inside a succession plan built around the people involved. Starting ten years out gives everyone more room to make a sound decision than starting with only one year to go.

Warning: The value of your investment may go down as well as up.
