Tractor driver fatigue is a major safety risk caused by long hours, noise, and vibration, particularly during intense seasons like silage or harvest, where 18-20 hour days can occur. It impairs performance similarly to alcohol, causing slowed reactions, poor decision-making, and increased risks of fatal accidents.
“Fatigue is a significant hazard in tractor operation especially around harvest time when farmers and contractors are working long hours. Long days can lead to slower reactions and poor decisions. Take breaks, pace yourself, and stop if you’re tired. No job is worth the risk.” says Ciaran Roche, FBD Insurance Risk Manager.
Tired? Stop the job and take a break. Fatigue leads to mistakes.
We have shared some tractor safety tips highlighting tractor safety week over the last 5 days if you missed any of them go back and have a look. It may just be what you needed.

Tractor-related incidents involving older farmers and young people account for over 50% of farm fatalities. Strict safety protocols, such as those detailed by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), require that children under seven never enter a tractor cab, while those 7–16 must use a proper passenger
“Always be vigilant of bystanders especially children and older persons. Keep children away from operating tractors. Ensure young operators are trained supervised and that they follow the legal age limits.” says Ciaran Roche, FBD Insurance Risk Manager.

Blind Spots need to be taken with extreme cautious and safety throughout the use of a tractor. At FBD we believe complacency leads to accidents, you should never feel complacency behind the wheel of a tractor and always be prepared for your blind spots.
“Tractors have significant blind spots, especially with trailers or loaders. Always check around the machine before moving, and make sure people stand well back. A quick look can prevent a devastating accident.” says Ciaran Roche, FBD Insurance Risk Manager.
Check all around before moving. Prevent the unthinkable.
This is our third theme of the week, and we’ll be sharing more tractor safety tips tomorrow and throughout the week, so keep your eyes peeled.
