The Insurance Institute is the number one provider of insurance qualifications, executive education, training and continuing professional development in Ireland. Established over 130 years ago, we are a not for profit organisation, committed to the learning and development of our 17,000 members working in insurance and financial services nationwide. We are headquartered in Dublin city, with Local Institutes based in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Sligo. Our Local Institutes, which are run entirely on a volunteer basis by key industry figures, are vital in supporting our members nationwide in both a social and educational capacity, through networking events, continuing professional development lectures and mentoring initiatives.

This week, the Insurance Institute of Sligo hosted a CPD day at the Radisson Blu, Rosses Point.

Members heard from Michael Brennan and Hugh O’Neill of AXA Ireland on construction trends and risk, from Fabian Murphy and Jack Dempsey of Aviva on fleet risk management and Accident and Health, and from Ronan Cosgrove on personal injury claims and litigation. Croí Heart & Stroke Charity also ran free health checks on the day, and more than half of those attending took them up.

Well done to Anne Marie McGovern, the Sligo Institute’s Education & CPD Officer, who organised the day, and thank you to Shane McCabe, President of the Insurance Institute of Sligo, for hosting and for sharing these photos.

Last week, the Insurance Institute of Dublin brought members to Kingspan’s IKON Innovation Centre in Cavan for an in-person CPD visit.

The group toured the centre and then heard a presentation on combustible and non-combustible materials. By all accounts, the highlight was a live fire demonstration that showed how combustibility is only one of several factors to weigh when assessing fire risk.

Well done to Nicola Shaw and Ian McNevin for organising the visit, and thank you to the Kingspan Group team for hosting. Thanks also to Julie Frazer, President of the Insurance Institute of Dublin, for sharing these photos.

Ask what an 'Expert' in insurance does day to day, and the answer depends entirely on which track they're on.
👉 In Broking, it's leading complex product analysis and negotiating bespoke cover directly with insurers.
👉 In Claims, it's strategic claims management: setting reserves and recovery strategy, and shaping how claims are handled across the organisation.
👉 In Underwriting, it's managing a full portfolio's performance and pricing complex risk using statistical methods, working with actuaries on where the business takes on exposure.

What connects them? The focus has moved from shaping how a team works to shaping how the business works.

By this stage, most have completed their Higher Diploma in Insurance Management (MDI). Many keep going with micro-credentials, the Certificate in Climate Risk, or the Certified Insurance Director designation.

We’ll be at the Dundalk Careers Event tomorrow, Tuesday 13 October, at the Gateway Hotel in Dundalk from 10am to 5pm.
This is the first year of the event, and it’s open to 6th Year students from schools and the FET college in the area. Naomi Gaffney and Amanda Kierans will be on our stand to talk about the Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship. It’s a way to earn a salary and gain a recognised qualification at the same time, with no college fees.
If you’re a student, teacher or guidance counsellor at the event, come and say hello.

We're at Meet the Market Day 2026 at the RDS today, stand D82 in Hall 4.

Come and meet Eva McCarthy, Programme Lead for the Higher Diploma in Insurance Management and AI Fundamentals, and Pablo Nunez, our Learning and Education Specialist.

The Higher Diploma is our Level 8 qualification, awarded by Atlantic Technological University, Sligo, and it leads to the MDI designation. It's delivered online over five modules, for insurance professionals who want to deepen their technical knowledge and build management skills.

Eva and Pablo can talk you through entry requirements, exemptions for earlier insurance qualifications, and how online study works. Whether you're thinking about it for yourself or for someone on your team, call by and ask.

📢 Date change: Our AI in Insurance CPD workshop with Brightbeam has moved forward one day to Tuesday 13 October, due to national industrial action scheduled for Wednesday 14 October.

The Insurance Institute of Limerick has partnered with Brightbeam to run this two-hour, in-person workshop on how AI can support you in your role and help deliver better outcomes for insurance customers. You'll get a clearer picture of what AI can do and how it's being applied in insurance, with practical ideas for using it in your day-to-day work. It's also a good chance to catch up with fellow members of the Insurance Institute of Limerick.

The Insurance Institute of Sligo is hosting a CPD day on Tuesday 13 October at the Radisson Blu, Rosses Point, with four sessions from speakers at AXA, Aviva and Sedgwick.

Sligo has partnered with Croí for the event, and a nurse will be on site offering free health checks to attendees.

The programme:
🕙 10am | Construction: Key Insurance Product Requirements and Risk Management Best Practice, with Hugh O'Neill and Michael Brennan, AXA (1-hour CPD accredited, Category 5)
