Richard Collins - Wealth Hacks From the people that brought you The Wealth Summit: a 4-Dimensional Wealth Architecture Platform for Business Owners

Some stories stay with you.

For me, getting into wealth management was not about chasing a career opportunity.

It was personal.

My father was an SME business owner who spent decades building his wealth. After battling cancer, he was advised on what would happen to his pension when he died.

The result left my mother without the pension she should have been able to rely on.

Having worked in accountancy, corporate finance and wealth management, I saw something that deeply frustrated me.

Irish families work incredibly hard to build wealth, but many never take the time to understand what happens to it when they are gone.

That experience became a driving force behind my career.

The goal was never to change the entire industry.

It was to make sure fewer families experienced what my own family had experienced.

This is why wealth planning matters.

It is not just about growing your money.

It is about making sure the wealth you spend a lifetime building ends up where you intended it to go.

Building wealth is incredibly difficult. Protecting it once it exists requires a completely different skill set.

Too often, families focus on creating wealth without putting the structure in place to protect it for the generations that follow.

Trust, a family constitution, clear succession planning and staged access to capital can help ensure the next generation earns their stripes without putting the family’s core wealth at risk.

If your family business or wealth does not yet have a proper constitution or succession structure around it, that is a conversation worth having now, while everyone is still around the table.

449.95 euro.

That’s what a share in LVMH was trading at this week.

Down 28% this year.

Doesn’t sound like a stock you’d want.

Zoom out, and the same share is up over 2,200% since it listed.

While people queue for the bag, and match the belt to the shoes, chasing the latest this season and call it an investment...

The company behind it all was making its early owners rich.

The bag goes out of fashion in six months.
The trainers get replaced next season.
The watch gets outclassed by whatever drops next year.

The shares don’t know what a season is.

I’m not telling you to buy LVMH. That’s not the point, and I’m not your stockbroker.

I’m telling you where I’ve seen wealth get built.
And I can tell you it was never in the wardrobe.

Buy the item and you’re funding someone else’s fortune.
Buy the shares and you start building your own.

Retirement doesn’t have to mean stopping work.

For many business owners, the real goal is reaching a point where work becomes optional.

That means building passive assets and passive income that give you the freedom to choose how you spend your time, rather than being forced into retirement because you have to.

Your pension is part of that plan, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of the lifestyle you want to enjoy along the way.

The goal isn’t to maximise your pension at all costs. It’s to optimise your wealth so you can build for the future while still enjoying today.

And for business owners, there’s another question worth asking.

What does your business look like when you eventually step back?

With the right people, structures and succession plan in place, retirement doesn’t necessarily mean walking away. It can mean creating a business that continues without you being at the centre of everything.

Retirement might not even be the goal.

Financial freedom is.

When it comes to selling your business, there’s one mistake we see far too often.

Treating exit planning as something you can figure out when the time comes.

Your business valuation, tax position, personal wealth, succession plan and the timing of your exit are all connected.

Waiting until you’re ready to sell can leave you with limited options and a very expensive lesson in hindsight.

There is no single most important part of exit planning. They all work together.

The question isn’t whether you plan to sell today.

It’s whether you’re building your business today with the eventual exit in mind.

Becoming a parent changes the way you think about wealth.

For business owners, building a successful business is often their first big achievement. But once you have children, the focus shifts from simply building wealth to making sure that wealth creates security, opportunity and a lasting legacy for your family.

Every financial decision should consider the bigger picture. How can you protect what you've built, invest wisely and make sure your wealth benefits your family without compromising the lifestyle you've worked so hard to create?

Because behind every business owner is a family, and every family has their own Snap, Crackle and Pop.

Sometimes the most expensive financial mistake is the one you never get around to fixing.

A husband and wife had run a successful retail business together for years and believed they owned it 50/50.

Their accountant had advised them to split the shares evenly, but it was never done.

When the business was eventually sold for €3 million, every share was still in the husband’s name.

The result? €1.5 million that could have qualified for a favourable 10% tax rate was taxed at the higher rate instead.

The difference was approximately €300,000.

That is €300,000 lost because a share structure was never properly put in place.

If you have been told to sort your share structure and keep putting it off, now is the time.
