40 years in business. For Seán, it comes down to one thing.

Still looking after the same people who walked through the door years ago – and doing it better now than when he started.That is it. That is the measure.

A lot changes over four decades. Seán has seen it all: new regulations, new technology, an industry that looks nothing like it did in 1986. But the person sitting across the desk has always been the same. Someone who needs clear advice, given honestly, by someone who actually cares about getting it right for them.

In 1986, Seán Matthews began SPM. What he had was a belief that people deserved straightforward, honest advice about their finances and insurance: and the conviction to build something around that belief.

By 1995 it had its own home on Scarlet Street. By 1998 it had incorporated. The client base grew not through aggressive marketing but through word of mouth – the oldest and most reliable measure of whether a business is doing things right.

Forty years later, Seán is still at the desk on Scarlet Street. Still taking calls. Still doing what he set out to do in 1986.

We have some big news: SPM Insurances is now SPM Financial Services.

Since Seán Matthews founded the business in 1986, the scope of what we do has expanded considerably: mortgage advice, retirement planning, financial protection and comprehensive insurance solutions across both personal and business.

The rebrand coincides with a milestone worth acknowledging. 2026 marks 40 years since Seán established the firm at 22 years of age. From those early foundations, SPM has grown steadily, expanding its service offering, investing in its premises and building a team of incredible people.

The new website accompanies the rebrand, built to better reflect the breadth of expertise and services available to clients today.

The name has changed, but, the address, the team and the standards that have guided us for 40 years have not. We look forward to continuing our commitment to our current clients and for what the future holds.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished family member and colleague, Mary Matthews — beloved sister of Seán.

Mary was a wonderful person whose positivity and kindness touched everyone she met. As both a cherished family member and a valued part of our business, she will be remembered for her warmth, loyalty, and the care she brought to everything she did. We will all miss her greatly.

In her memory, our offices will be closed on Wednesday, 29th October 2025, to allow us to come together to celebrate her life. We will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, 30th October.

We would like to thank our customers for their continued support, understanding, and kind words during this difficult time.
