Home insurance is often renewed without a second thought. The rebuild cost of a property, however, changes over time – and a policy that has not been reviewed in several years may no longer reflect what it would actually cost to reinstate your home.

Underinsurance is one of the most common issues identified when customers come to review their cover. Where a rebuild value is significantly understated, insurers may apply a proportional reduction to any claim paid – meaning a shortfall at the point when full protection matters most.

A few areas worth reviewing:

– Whether your rebuild value reflects current construction costs
– Whether extensions or significant home improvements have been accounted for
– Whether your contents sum insured still reflects what you own

New figures from the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland show that nearly 20,000 uninsured vehicles were seized by An Garda Síochána in 2025 – bringing the total to over 38,000 in the two years since the Irish Motor Insurance Database was introduced.

The scale of uninsured driving on Irish roads has a direct impact on every motorist who does hold valid cover. The cost of claims involving uninsured vehicles is absorbed by the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Ireland and, over time, reflected in premiums across the market.
