Life planning and financial planning often get confused. Your life plan comes first. Without it, a financial plan lacks purpose. Without a life plan, you're a bit like a paper boat bobbing about at the whim of the current and wind.

Our latest blog post looks at the importance of having a life plan, what it does and how it relates to a financial plan.

Here is a 12-point list to help you make the best financial planning decisions:

✅ Is the financial advisor talking about financial planning or just trying to sell you?

✅ An investment. If it is just an investment is that what you need? Or do you need a proper financial plan?

✅ Never sign any paperwork at a first meeting. Resist any pressure to do so.

✅ Ask lots of questions and ask for the investment or savings plan details in writing.

✅ How long will you be invested? (A ten-year plan could be fine for someone working in yachting long term, but not for young crew who are spending a few years on boats to travel the world)

✅ Can you cash in the full value of all your investment at any time? If not, how does it work and is this the right investment for you?

✅ What company are you investing with and what are their website details?

✅ What will you be invested in? It should be diversified funds (groups of stocks) or maybe stocks, not just one bamboo farm. If you are told you will be investing funds/ stocks, ask what they are and why in those funds or stocks?

✅ How often will your investment be reviewed and managed?

✅ Don’t be too distracted by talk of bonuses etc. Whilst it is always great to get a bonus, it is the money you have invested and the funds you are invested in that will have the biggest impact on your investment value over time.

✅ How can your financial advisor be contacted and where is he or she based?

✅ How long have they been working as financial advisors and where are they regulated?

We look at the difference between these two quetions:

1. 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'

2. 'Who wants to live like a millionaire?'

Both are within your reach. And No.2 doesn't require No.1.

Here’s a stupid question: Who wants to be a millionaire? (As long as the currency is a sensible one, of course.) Let’s face it, the only people who don’t

If you were asked to create a difficult work environment from scratch, you’d probably come up with one that included long days, irregular hours, unpredictable requests, an endless to-do list that is constantly changing, multiple taskmasters, last-second updates, lack of respect, confined working spaces, heat, exhaustion, constant noise, limited privacy, isolation and months spent away from friends and family. In fact, you could come up with a superyacht.

Small wonder that mental health among crew has become a topic of discussion. Yet that discussion hasn’t always led to industrywide action. That makes it all the more important that you are able to look after your own mental health, rather than relying on the yacht owner or management company to do anything to help you.

Here’s a popular piece of financial advice you often see: put your money in a fund that tracks one of the major stock market indices, like the S&P 500 or the FTSE 100.

It’s not terrible advice. Especially compared with doing nothing with your money or, even worse, just spending it all.

When you invest in a tracker fund, you’re investing in the same basket of stocks that make up these markets.

More likely than not, you’ll be investing money on a monthly basis, which means you’ll be buying stocks at all stages of the market cycle, including when stocks are at low points. That’s exactly when you want to buy, because there is more opportunity for growth and profit.

But timing the market is hard, so spreading your investments like this means you’ll benefit at least some of the time.

Over the course of years and decades, it’s very likely indeed that the value of your investments will increase. Maybe even considerably. After all, while there have been dips, some quite severe, the major stock markets have always recovered and have grown steadily over time.

What more could you possibly want?

We consider a better alternative in our latest blog post at https://yfsol.com/is-tracker-fund-the-answer/
