Greenify Tip of the Week – Vampire devices
That standby light could still be using electricity.
Your TV, games console, laptop charger, printer, microwave clock and smart speaker may all continue to draw power even when they are not in active use.
These are often called standby or “vampire” appliances, and over time they can add to your electricity use without you really noticing.
Some common examples include:
Desktop computers on standby
Laptops left plugged in when fully charged
Games consoles left in instant-on mode
A simple fix is to use a multi-socket extension lead with an on/off switch. Plug in devices like your TV, box and sound bar, then switch them off fully at night or when you are out.
The same works for a home office. If your monitor, laptop and printer are all connected to one strip, you can switch them off together when you finish work.
When you’re ready to go beyond quick fixes, Greenify offers green loans through your local credit union for home energy upgrades, designed to work alongside available SEAI grants.
