After the warmest spell of the year so far, the return of rain this week changes grass management on farm. Teagasc Grass10's target pre-grazing yield remains 1,300–1,400kg DM/ha but after a dry spell followed by rain, covers can vary from paddock to paddock.

What to prioritise this week according:
✅Before making any grazing decisions, walk the farm and know it's current state
✅Prioritise controlling grass covers
✅Rest rain-softened paddocks this week; poaching now costs you weeks of grass growth
✅Recheck water troughs as dehydrated cows will be reflected in milk yield

As Teagasc Grass10 has consistently noted, every extra 1kg DM of grass eaten per cow per day over the season is worth €120/cow in additional profit. Managing this transition well protects that return.

If cashflow is a barrier to your farm decisions this week, whether that's contractor costs or silage, talk to Ballina Credit Union today.

🩷 Today we had the privilege of welcoming Lisa from Breast Cancer Ireland to our office, where she shared valuable information, important advice, and some personal stories surrounding breast cancer.

Cancer is something that has touched so many homes and families, and conversations like these are so important in raising awareness and encouraging early detection.

As Lisa reminded us, breast cancer does not discriminate by age or gender. It can affect anyone, which is why awareness, education, and regular self-checks are so important.

We want to take this opportunity to encourage anyone reading this to visit the Breast Cancer Ireland website, https://www.breastcancerireland.com/ learn the signs and symptoms, and educate yourself and those around you. Knowledge truly is power, and early detection can save lives. 🩷

A huge thank you to Lisa and Breast Cancer Ireland for taking the time to speak with us and continue the incredible work they do in supporting awareness, education, and research. 💗

With the arrival of warm weather after a wet May, Agriland is urging farmers to prioritise fly control on their herds this week to keep animals healthy. Flies thrive in warm conditions, especially following heavy rain.

As temperatures rise, flies and insects will multiply and become hard to control and can cause infections in your herd such as summer mastitisIn terms of prevention, Agriland recommends the use of teat sealers as one effective method.

For more information on how to treat or prevent summer mastitis, check out Agriland's article on 'Fly control as warm front rolls in'.

If you have identified other areas on the farm that need investment to prioritise herd health, contact us today to discuss Cultivate's farmer friendly finance options. Call 096 71066 or visit https://www.ballinacu.ie/loans/cultivate-agricultural-loan/

Teagasc Grass10 reports that over 50% of Irish farms are currently carrying covers above 1,500kg DM/ha when the target pre-grazing yield is 1,300–1,400kg DM/ha.
As Dr. Joe Patton, Teagasc Head of Dairy Knowledge Transfer, puts it, cows grazing heavier covers "fall behind on yield and solids" and every extra 1kg DM of grass eaten per cow per day is worth €120/cow in additional profit.

Teagasc Grass10 team recommends:
Walk your farm weekly - use the PastureBase Ireland Grass Wedge
Graze at the 2-3 leaf stage before stem develops
Skip heavy paddocks and bale them when weather allows
Target an average farm cover of 650kg DM/ha
Reseed poor sward paddocks where needed

Dr. Patton's advice is "Don't change too much. Get the right targets in place and stick to them."
