The seven helpers

Deep in the country side of Hong Kong in Yuen Long, lies this grand colonial country mansion.
。
In front of the house, two lines of Chinese poetry engraved onto the gate wall.
。
“The playful sceneries and distant hills are like beautiful, like a painting”.
。
“Big trees and maple leaves surround this house when the owner arrives”.
。
It seems the Instagram hot spot, of Yuen Long maple leaves existed 100 years ago already.
。
Built in 1925, it has a red brick design, wooden French windows and doors, with verandah to dissipate the hot summer heat, common features of colonial Far East British architecture.

The clock tower above, almost a miniature replica of the Tsim Sha Tsui clock tower. However, instead of a bell or a clock, it is used for flag raising and a gathering point for villagers and farmers to greet of colonial official and dignitaries arrive to tour the New Territories.

The fountain in front of the house, used to be a huge pond. One of the seven helpers had an affair with the owner of the house. The wife of the owner, didn’t know which helper it was. She pushed all seven helpers into the pond and drowned them. Afterwards, the pond was covered up and replaced by a small fountain you see in the photo now.

The house is now abandoned and is one of the most haunted spots in Hong Kong (even in daytime). To this date, the local villagers still burn incense, place cooked chickens and fresh fruits in front of the house to calm those spirits below.
