Scout still needed treatment, though, for a different and surprising reason: The object had inhibited a step in her body’s absorption of vitamin B12. B12 is an essential nutrient involved in the proper functioning of blood cells, nerves, and many other critical processes in the body.

Humans need only 2.4 micrograms of B12 daily, which is equivalent to one ten-millionth of an ounce – a very, very small amount.

Although cannabis (and cannabis-derived products, such as CBD) may be widely used for reducing pain, how effective it really is in doing this is still unclear. This is what our recent systematic review and meta-analysis sought to uncover.

“Uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy is associated with a number of adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes, including excessive fetal growth, difficult delivery, birth injuries, and low blood sugars in the baby after birth.”

A recent study found that regular coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes among people with a prior history of gestational diabetes.

The study authors concluded that the ma*****na and to***co group had more lung damage than to the lungs than to***co alone did. That isn’t a terribly surprising conclusion. Inhaling smoke, be it wildfire, ma*****na, or cigarette smoke, will damage your lungs. Certainly, some kinds of smoke can be more damaging than others, so it may well be that a history of inhaling two types of smoke might damage a person’s lungs more than inhaling just one kind.

Flaws in a viral study have some calling for its retraction.

Everyone needs the mineral sodium, but high salt intake is a known risk factor for high blood pressure, which in itself is a risk factor for many other chronic diseases, including heart disease.

A study looked at the link between how frequently people added salt to their meals and the incidence of heart disease.

“Verseon’s drug belongs to a novel class of drug molecules that act by a different mechanism on its target in the body. This mechanism preserves hemostasis and is key to the lower bleeding risk demonstrated in ‘in vivo’ tests,” Jones explained.

The researchers note that PROACs do not inhibit platelet function which could explain the lower bleeding risk that may be associated with these drug candidates. The company highlights that these properties make them good candidates for future anticoagulant therapies.

The thrombin inhibitors described in this paper are effective at preventing clots in animal models. In addition, they do not inhibit the thrombin-mediated activation of platelets. This is a critical step to stop injury-induced bleeding, meaning these drug candidates have shown far lower bleeding risks in animal models.

Cardiovascular conditions, such as Afib, are often treated with anticoagulants that can cause bleeding issues. A new generation of oral anticoagulants may prevent unwanted clots while preserving the body’s ability to stop excessive bleeding.

Because how the body responds to a medication can differ depending on whether it is taken during the day or at night, it logically follows that taking medications at specific times could help increase their effectiveness and reduce unwanted side effects.

Doctors know that timing of medication matters, but a new study suggests that some drugs can prove risky when taken at certain times of day.

For this study, researchers conducted a study with 165 people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to follow either a low-carbohydrate, high fat diet or a high-carbohydrate, low fat diet for six months.

A study found that a low carb, high fat diet can help people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and control glucose levels better than a high carb, low fat diet.

In a cold room, the skin’s cold receptors are the first to be stimulated and cause the skin’s blood vessels to constrict, redirecting warm blood beneath the insulating fat layer we have just beneath the skin.

In evolutionary terms, we are tropical animals: when naked and at rest, we’re most comfortable in the air around 28° Celsius, with an average skin surface temperature of 33° C. But to survive and function normally, we must also maintain our deep body (core) temperature close to 37° C.

Participants were then split into two groups of 36 and were assigned either an IF regimen or regular unrestricted eating. The intervention period lasted for 3 months and included six cycles of 15 intervention days.

In each cycle, participants were assigned a specific, modified fasting diet for 5 days, in which they consumed a total of 840 calories across morning, afternoon, and evening meals. During the following 10 days, they ate as much as they wanted of what they wanted, similar to the control group.

A recent study observed the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on type 2 diabetes for 3 months. The researchers found that IF led to the complete remission of diabetes in nearly half of the participants.

But here’s the thing: Not all immune responses to a vaccine are created equal. Depending on your age, genetics, lifestyle choices, and other factors scientists are still figuring out, the firewall your immune system erects will be slightly different than say your elderly neighbor or a months-old baby. Since vaccines are our best line of defense against the tide of infectious disease, is there anything you can do to give your immune system a leg up, an extra pair of hands to help lay down the firewall’s bricks and mortar? With a good night’s sleep, a nutritious diet, and enough exercise, actually yes.

It's all about doing the things that promote a healthy immune system.

Lipoproteins consist of protein and fat and carry cholesterol through the blood. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good cholesterol,” as it absorbs cholesterol in the blood and carries it to the liver from where the body can dispose of it.

Low-density cholesterol (LDL) carries cholesterol to cells and is known as “bad” cholesterol. Lp(a) is a type of LDL that builds up along the walls of blood vessels and increases a person’s risk of heart attack or stroke.

Hypertension plus high levels of a 'sticky' form of cholesterol are linked to more than double the risk of cardiovascular events in a large study cohort.
