🏛️ If you walk along PesmazoglouStreet in the heart of Athens today, you will notice the inscription “THE STOCK EXCHANGE” on the façade of the building at No. 1.

This is more than a simple nod to the past.

The building housed the Athens Stock Exchange for over four decades, from 1 November 1891 until November 1934.

The inscription remains visible today, serving as one of the few tangible reminders of the institution’s presence in Athens’ historic city centre.

🏛️ Αν σήμερα βρεθεί κανείς στην οδό Πεσμαζόγλου, στο κέντρο της Αθήνας, θα διακρίνει στην πρόσοψη του κτιρίου στον αριθμό 1 την επιγραφή «ΤΟ ΧΡΗΜΑΤΙΣΤΗΡΙΟ».

Δεν πρόκειται για μια απλή αναφορά στο παρελθόν.

Στο κτίριο αυτό στεγάστηκε το Χρηματιστήριο Αθηνών για περισσότερα από τέσσερις δεκαετίες, από την 1η Νοεμβρίου 1891 έως τον Νοέμβριο του 1934.

Η επιγραφή παραμένει έως σήμερα ως μία από τις λίγες ορατές υπενθυμίσεις της παρουσίας του θεσμού στο ιστορικό κέντρο της πόλης.

📜 30 September 1876

The story of the Athens Stock Exchange began on 30 September 1876, during the premiership of Alexandros Koumoundouros, whose government issued the decree for the institution’s establishment.

Its first premises were located inthe historic Mela Mansion, a building that had previously served as Athens’ central post office. The Stock Exchange remained there until September 1881.

Shortly afterwards, on 12 November 1876, its first internal regulations were published in the Government Gazette, laying the foundations for its operation.

These early milestones marked the beginning of the remarkable journey of an institution that would go on to shape the growth of the Greek capital market.

📜 30 Σεπτεμβρίου 1876

Η ιστορία του Χρηματιστηρίου Αθηνών ξεκινά επί κυβερνήσεως Αλέξανδρου Κουμουνδούρου, όταν εκδόθηκε η κυβερνητική απόφαση για τη σύστασή του.

Η πρώτη του στέγη ήταν το Μέγαρο Μελά, στον χώρο όπου μέχρι τότε λειτουργούσε το κεντρικό ταχυδρομείο της Αθήνας. Το Χρηματιστήριο παρέμεινε εκεί έως τα τέλη Σεπτεμβρίου του 1881.

Λίγες εβδομάδες αργότερα, στις 12 Νοεμβρίου 1876, δημοσιεύθηκε στην Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως ο πρώτος εσωτερικός κανονισμός λειτουργίας του θεσμού.

Έτσι ξεκίνησε η πορεία ενός θεσμού που επρόκειτο να διαδραματίσει σημαντικό ρόλο στην ανάπτυξη της ελληνικής κεφαλαιαγοράς.
