Harnessing technology to establish and empower smallholder farmer cooperatives represents a transformative approach to agricultural development. Technology serves as a catalyst for connectivity, information dissemination, and resource optimization, enabling farmers to collaborate effectively. AgroCenta’s digital platforms facilitate real-time communication, allowing farmers to share knowledge, market information, and best practices.
As part of AgroCenta’s drive to build the cooperative governance structure of thousands of smallholder farmers across Ghana, AgroCenta in partnership with Global Shea Alliance, under the Shea Business Empowerment Program - SBEP (with funding from MasterCard Foundation) has deployed the “Digital Committee” approach where young people within the ages of 18-35 years, who are members of shea cooperatives in Northern Ghana are being trained on digital solutions such as farmer data collection, financial services such as loan originations, digital trade activities, quality control checks, inventory and warehouse managements. This will enable these digital committees function as a business unit within the cooperatives and provide services directly to other members.
So far, AgroCenta has trained and deployed 120 young people who will work with their farmer cooperatives and use digital tools to enhance and grow their farmer cooperatives. By end of 2024, AgroCenta will train and deploy 750 Digital Committee Members, across 150 women shea Cooperatives
By leveraging these digital tools, smallholder farmers can form cohesive cooperatives, pooling resources, and collectively navigating challenges. This synergy not only enhances agricultural productivity but also strengthens the socio-economic fabric of rural communities, fostering sustainable development and resilience in the face of evolving global challenges.
