Glyn Valley Tramway Trust Recreating history... Part of the historic Glyn Valley Tramway - dubbed the 'Little bit of Heaven Railway' [email protected]

Chirk 'the Gateway to Wales' is a pretty little town situated on the edge of the County of Wrexham, and at the start of the beautiful Ceiriog Valley. Chirk is set to see steam trains running once again through its picturesque scenery. We are working to restore the Glyn Valley Tramway, a narrow gauge railway that ran between Chirk and Hendre Quarry near Glyn Ceiriog between 1873 and 1935...

The G

lyn Valley Tramway was a narrow gauge railway that operated between 1873 and 1935 in the Glyn Valley near Chirk. Originally horse powered, the line originally terminated at a wharf on the Llangollen Canal near to the Poachers Pocket restaurant near Chirk Bank, the remains of which can still be seen today. In 1886-1888, the line was converted to steam and diverted to terminate at Chirk railway station, where it continued to run until its final closure on the 6th July 1935. The Glyn Valley Tramway Trust in Chirk is a Charity (Charity number: 1121437) committed to reinstating the former Tramway, as a steam heritage railway and wishes to work with other organisations to deliver a viable project and provide benefits to the local economy. Please feel free to contact us by either our website or via the email address below.

Today we travelled up the M6 motorway to C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd in Wigan to inspect the Hunslet locomotive which was recently purchased from the Blatchford Light Railway by one of our board members.

The locomotive appears to be in good overall condition, it has benefited from being quite a recent build, and from having being stored under cover. A plan of work to both re-gauge, and restore the locomotive to full working order has been agreed; and all being well, work is scheduled to start next week.

Yesterday in warm spring sunshine we continued working on the Tramway. We have moved most of our new rail down to our PW storage area and stacked it neatly for future use along the 'Chirk Straight'. This allowed us to add one further track panel in the 'mainline', and we also added fishplates to the three track panels that will form the line into the rolling stock building.

Our next track related project will be to re-gauge and install our RH set of points, which we will do as soon as funds allow.

This week, we returned to replacing the track panels to the south-side of Hand Lane bridge. Using one of our RNAD flat wagons, we moved two light-weight track panels that were stored on top of the running line in the platform. We were able to use the track laid two weeks ago to help us move these into the yard area for storage.Once this had been done, we used our excavator to add two more track panels to our existing running line.

Meanwhile, in Wigan at C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd one of our volunteers has continued working on the body panels on the first of two coaches obtained from the Blatchford Light Railway in Somerset. C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd will be re-gauging and installing air brake equipment to these coaches in the near future.

This weekend our hard working sales team have an exhibition stand booked at the Festival of Railway Modelling at Alexandra Palace, London. Please visit us there to find out more about our exciting plans for 2026.

After a slow start to 2026 which saw many working parties being cancelled due to the extremely wet weather, it was pleasing to see work progressing on two fronts yesterday.

At Chirk Station, our Volunteers relaid three track panels under Hand Lane Bridge. Meanwhile at C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd workshops in Wigan, our volunteers have been working on one of the coaches obtained from the Blatchford Light Railway in Somerset. It is hoped to remove the axles next week, in order to assess their condition prior to re-gauging to 2ft 3in.

The Trust's narrow gauge equipment has arrived safely at C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd, having being transported safely by TCs Haulage.

CJS have already managed to start the locomotive, and have confirmed that the air system is working. Hopefully work on regauging the locomotive will commence in the near future. Many thanks to CJS Engineering Ltd for supplying the video.

Today the Trust's loyal team of volunteers made the long journey down to Somerset to collect some narrow gauge rolling stock and point-work from The Blatchford Light Railway.

Amazingly, given the recent run of prolonged wet weather, the team enjoyed a spell of much drier weather today, which has made their job much easier. These items will now head up to C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd in Wigan for re-gauging and recommissioning work. They will hopefully arrive on GVTT metals at Chirk later this year. Many thanks to Taylor for supplying the photos.

Wet weather has regularly affected our Friday working parties in recent weeks. However yesterday, after a few light rain showers our team of stalwart volunteers were rewarded by clear blue skies and fairly mild temperatures.

Work has continued with clearing the platform surface of soil, bricks and stone, and the newly rebuilt southern end platform face has been revealed following the removal of a protective tarpaulin. The boundary fencing has received further attention, and one of the badly damaged posts has been replaced. Brick cleaning has also continued; which is a slow and laborious (but worthwhile) job.

We had an amazing time yesterday at the C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd Open Day in Wigan, there was steam everywhere with three Steam Traction Engines/Rollers on site, and also giving rides around the Clarington Forge site; there was also a number of narrow gauge locomotives on display which are currently undergoing restoration, including our own Kerr Stuart replica 'Tattoo' locomotive, which was kindly donated to us by the Castro family. To our amazement C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd had already machined the wheels and axles and turned the frames into a rolling chassis. A miniature steam locomotive provided rides within the workshop, adding to the lovely steamy atmosphere which was pervading the site. The Trust have set up the 'No.5 Club' to finance the Kerr Stuart locomotive build.

Many thanks to C.J.S Heritage engineering Ltd for all their hard work in making this event possible, and also to Colin Edmondson for permission to use his fantastic photos. (additional photos were provided by GVTT volunteers).
