It's a question many people don't think about until they start looking at their estate planning, but your pension could now play a much bigger role in your Inheritance Tax position.

If you have a pension alongside your home, savings and investments, including the pension in your estate could change the amount of IHT the deceased estate may have to pay.

It's not just about the value of your pension, it's also worth checking that your pension expression of wish is up to date and works alongside your Will and wider plans.

Could your pension increase your Inheritance Tax bill?

For years, pensions have been an important part of retirement planning — and they have also offered some useful Inheritance Tax benefits.

But the rules are changing from April 2027…

Unused pension funds will be brought into the estate when calculating Inheritance Tax, meaning some families could face a larger IHT bill than they might expect.

For example, someone with £300,000 in chargeable assets and £327,000 in pension savings could potentially see a £50,800 Inheritance Tax bill under the new rules.

So what does this mean for your pension, your retirement plans and the wealth you want to leave behind?
