AFTER a year like no other, the Wotton Times contemplates a Christmas that will be different to any we’ve known before. Our December issue reflects this, offering perspectives from many people who have played key roles in local life this year. What do we all want for Christmas? The heartfelt answers in this month’s issue are a moving read.
Ingenuity is the watchword this issue. We look at a Wotton business that has used lockdown to experiment with new niche ideas; we focus on the launch of a nimble and adaptable business idea that we can all literally raise a glass to; we find out how two of our key primary schools have adapted to preserve community cohesion at Christmas... and we catch up with some recipes for successful fundraising from parents who have tirelessly stepped up when traditional fundraising has been scuppered.
For inspiration outdoors, we offer not one but two cobweb-blasting walks around Wickwar. And in the nick of time before the anniversary slips by, there's darker inspiration for a walk around North Nibley that steps back in time – all the way to 1470.
Our news coverage as 2020 departs remains keen as ever: we've got exclusive stories on archaeological questions raised by a failed planning application, the implications of new traffic regulations in Wotton, a water supply to public conveniences that cost more than £7,000. Plus we find out how a local athlete faired when he undertook a gruelling 16-session workout – in just 16 hours!
Our columnists have certainly not clocked off for Christmas. After the political turmoil in the USA, Tom Wharin explores the interplay of politics and Christianity while new contributor Christiane Goaziou reports on the birds we’re likely to spot on a walk in Westridge Woods.
Finally, as the second lockdown ends, we urge readers to please keep business local and support those in our area who've worked so hard to survive 2020.
Many of our retailers are also stockists of our little newspaper, so if you can support them by buying a copy you'll also be supporting the future for local journalism.
With your support, we pledge to ensure real local news is not just for Christmas – it's a year-round thing!
