❗️New Rural Business Capital Expenditure Scheme now open for applications ❗️

A new grant scheme, run by the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, is now available for rural businesses across Cumbria, offering capital grants in the range of £1,000 to £49,999, with an average anticipated claim of £15,000.

The scheme supports growth and investment projects, including new equipment, premises improvements, innovation, diversification, and job creation or safeguarding. It is designed to help rural businesses take the next step, whether that’s expanding, modernising, or exploring new opportunities.

With only 65 grants available, applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible for consideration.

Jason Spires, our Accountancy & Audit Partner, welcomes the scheme, saying,

"This is a fantastic opportunity for growing businesses to claim some much-needed support. The grants are discretionary and competitive, therefore early submissions are advised, with the deadline for first panel consideration being 12 noon on Monday, 22nd June 2026."

Deadlines can quickly build up - from VAT returns to payroll submissions and tax payments, it’s essential to know what you need to submit and when. ⚠️

Keeping a clear schedule and staying organised throughout the year helps avoid last-minute pressure and reduces the risk of errors or penalties.

Are you aware of your deadlines? If not, now is the time to plan ahead and set yourself up for success.

Bookkeeping is often seen as an administrative task, but accurate records are one of the most important foundations of good financial management. 💻

Keeping information organised and up to date helps improve visibility, supports better reporting and reduces the risk of errors.

It also makes deadlines, tax returns and year-end preparation far more manageable when the time comes, which is never a bad thing!

We’re getting ready to head out on our annual agricultural roadshow this summer! 🌾

We’re returning to Cockermouth Agricultural Show and Gosforth show - two amazing local events that we are proud to support.

It’s always a highlight of our year getting out into the local farming community, catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones along the way. 🚜

If you’re attending either show, come by our tent for a drink and a chat – we’d love to see you and talk through how we can support you and your business.

Growth is positive for any business, but it can create added pressure behind the scenes. 📈

If not planned for in advance, increased demand can put pressure on cash flow, staffing, systems and day-to-day operations.

Looking ahead – whether that’s forecasting income, reviewing capacity or understanding what costs are coming up – gives you time to ensure growth is manageable rather than overwhelming.

When it comes to property investment, rental income is only one factor to consider. 🏡

Ongoing costs such as maintenance, mortgage interest, insurance, taxes, and void periods can all have an impact on the true rate of return.

Looking at the big picture, rather than just the rental figures, provides a more accurate picture of how a property is performing. This can also indicate whether changes are required, such as reviewing rent prices, managing costs, or considering long-term plans.

Regularly stepping back and reviewing performance ensures that your property investments remain in line with your financial goals.

For farming businesses, input costs such as feed, fuel and fertiliser can change quickly and often with little notice.

These fluctuations can have a direct impact on margins, particularly where prices are already tight.

Where possible, building some flexibility into budgets or forward planning for key purchases can reduce the impact of sudden increases.

For many business owners and self-employed people, income isn’t always consistent from month to month. 👨‍💼

Planning for quieter periods, saving money during stronger months and having a clear view of upcoming costs can help ease financial pressure.

A simple strategy can significantly improve overall stability.
