Lovely round of golf at Puttenham Golf Club last Friday with the The "FORE" Business Forum group. Didn't play my best but I'll blame the heat!

Great article from the telegraph about the complexities of retirement and how to take out your money in the most efficient way.

It says look at ISAs and tax free cash first before you start taking the taxed part of your pension but maybe a blended approach is better...

No-one wants to pay more tax than they need to at any stage of life, but it’s particularly important to make sure you’re not overpaying in retirement when drawing down on your savings. The key to reducing how much tax you pay is by looking at the order in which you take your pension and other sa...

Interesting article in the daily express today about tax relief on pension contributions. Although I find it hard to believe that as much as 75% of higher rate tax payers are not claiming back the extra!

Simply put...

If you are a basic rate tax payer then there is nothing to do as you get the 20% tax relief automatically.

If you are a higher rate tax payer then you need to do some extra work to get the extra relief. If your employer does salary sacrifice then its likely you don't need to do anything but if not then you might have to.

I had a client recently who did not know about this and had not been claiming the extra relief for years. We managed to get it back dated for the last 4 years but anything before that was lost.

It pays to know.

75% eligible to claim failed to do so, leaving £1.3 billion unclaimed.Experts say it's relatively pain-free and shouldn't take too long to claim

Pension contributions vs growth! which affect your pension pot more?

In this example the employee starts off age 20 on £20,000. Their salary goes up by 2% each year. They put 5% in their pension and their employer puts in 3%. Growth is 5%.

I get a lot of people asking questions like...

How much do I need in my pension?
How much will I be able to draw out my pension each year when I retire?
How long will my pension last?
Have i got enough in my pension?

It is different for everyone but this basic cash flow forecast helps answer those questions...

The orange bars are the pension starting to pay out at 67 and the red is the pension deficit that starts at 74.
