Whilst there are many factors behind the decline in social mobility in the UK, it is hard to ignore the role house prices play (London is at 8 times average wages according to Nationwide, so no wonder the ability of parents to help is so key to many purchasers). Whilst none of us like excessive building, we may have to accept some uncomfortable trade-offs if we are to fix the problem, as no society benefits when people feel that they have no way forward, or, more importantly, upwards.

Yesterday, US inflation was up. Today, job creation is well down, but wage growth up, and unemployment rate up, but not by that much (yet?). With such a mixed picture, the biggest takeaway seems to be the huge downward revisions of the data from May and June, down by a combined 258,000 jobs. For investors, it is always hard to position on mixed data, but especially so when the data could be miles out. At least the UK’s Office of National Statistics can show that they are not alone in having such issues. 😉

Nonfarm payrolls were expected to increase by 100,000 in July, according to the Dow Jones consensus estimate.

Even so, it is very disappointing to see such announcements (and BP are not alone). So VAT is discriminatory against the US because the rate is higher than the sales taxes applied in the US, even though both are applied to all goods (domestic or foreign). As with many recent prouncements, people are wondering if Trump does not understand why this is daft, or just does not care. Our view: don’t spend time trying to work it out, as either way he is going to do what he is going to do.

So the President-elect of the US will not rule out using military power to take territory from a NATO ally. The fact that this is not even the lead story in some media outlets speaks to how immune we have become to outrageous statements from Donald Trump. That feels like a very dangerous place to be.

Many of Trump’s stated policies come with the risk that they stoke inflation. Even though they could be good for US businesses in the short-term, the longer-term outcome is less sure. This is a ‘known known’, to paraphrase another Donald, so markets will be watching for any signs of overheating. Therefore, even as we think that US equities are a decent place to be next year, we should all probably expect more of this sort of volatility.

Wall Street closed sharply lower on Wednesday, with the Dow falling over 1,100 points after the U.S. Federal Reserve delivered a rate cut as expected but signaled it will ease the pace of further cuts in the coming year.
