One of the biggest misconceptions around wills is the idea of the “common-law spouse”.
If you live together but you’re not married or in a civil partnership, your partner does not automatically inherit your estate if you die without a valid will.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been together for 5 years, 15 years or 30 years.
It doesn’t even matter if everyone around you knows exactly what you would have wanted.
Without a valid will, the rules of intestacy decide who inherits — and those rules might look very different from the wishes you had in your head.
That’s the thing about wills.
They’re not really about how much you own.
They’re about making sure your wishes are actually your wishes.
And sometimes, assuming “they’ll get it anyway” can leave the person you love dealing with something you never intended them to.
