Ferry Project

Ferry Project Helping the homeless with love and support towards independence since 1998 On entry to Ferry Project, individuals are assigned a key worker.

Established in 1998, Ferry project is an award winning social enterprise and registered charity that helps homeless people in fenland. The aim of the ferry project is not simply to provide accommodation, but to give people the skills they need to enable them to live independently. These include life skills such as cooking and cleaning, education courses, vocational training, volunteering and emplo

yment opportunities. We currently provide up to fifty bed spaces in Wisbech and engage with over three hundred clients per year. We are the largest provider for homelessness-related issues in the district, engaging with an estimated eighty percent of those who find themselves homeless in Fenland. "Ferry Project provides a short-term interaction in an individual’s life when they have an immediate need. Once we carry them to their destination, they move on.”
Keith Smith, Founder & Director of Ferry Project

Our clients include people with financial problems, people fleeing domestic violence, people recovering from a family breakdown or from drug and alcohol abuse, young people leaving the care system, those who have been sexually abused, ex-offenders and those with simply nowhere else to go. The key worker will work with the individual client to assess that person’s need and create an individual support plan with self-determined goals. These goals may include referrals to partner agencies, and getting back in touch with family and friends. Counselling and basic skills training are performed at the project’s headquarters, Octavia View, with additional educational courses provided at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech.

Hi, I’m Mick*. My journey out of homelessness was quite rocky. When I was a teenager, my Dad died. My mum then started dating a s*x offender. After a few years they moved to Norwich, and I ended up getting into drugs and losing my job. My friend let me stay on his sofa, but after a few weeks he brought me to the Ferry Project to get help.

It was hard work. I missed a lot of keywork sessions, let my room get really dirty, and almost got evicted. I owed a couple of hundred quid to a drug dealer because I was smoking a few joints a day, so I couldn't pay my service charge. But the Ferry team kept believing in me.

They got some funding to help me pay off my service charge debt, and got me a fresh start in a new room. I moved out of Ferry and now live at my girlfriend’s mum’s house. I’m working as a forklift driver and feel hopeful for the future.
