AM Accounts Helping you set up and run your own business with the right numbers - accounts, tax, Xero bookkeeping

I've just had two brilliant clients email me the first nine months of their 2023-24 records so I can get a headstart in my quiet time in Feb/Mar and they only have to sort out their last quarter in April 😇

They will get their 2023-24 accounts and tax return submitted in April, they will know exactly what they have to pay in 2025 and will be able to budget for it, and they'll have nine months to go away and make money in their busiest period without me hassling them for their records. And on top of that, they will pay less. Virtue has its own reward 😇

If you run a small business and this sounds like a better way to manage your tax affairs then I'd love to hear from you!

I recently got my renewal quote from my insurance broker for Buildings & Contents Insurance - we've been happy enough with the same one for years, and mostly the policy only went up by a few pounds a year, so not worth my time to shop around. This year however, the increase was so big it prompted me to look elsewhere. I found a better policy and it's costing less than I paid last year, never mind this year. I'm now simultaneously delighted at the saving and furious that I probably could have done better years ago.

Lesson for business owners: Consider how you go about repricing your work with regular clients. Happy clients won't generally mind regular modest price increases, but if you attempt an enormous jump in price after five static years with no change in service then your hitherto happy client might start questioning the value they are getting. If they find that better value elsewhere then you risk not only losing that happy client, but finding that they have turned the experience into social media content 😉

I haven't posted properly for a long time so thought it was time to say Hi to my followers and introduce myself.
I'm Annemarie, I own AM Accounts and I live in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales. When I'm not at my desk or visiting clients, I'll be out and about walking my two very noisy Jack Russells, in the gym or pottering in the kitchen or garden. Here's me planting some bare root roses recently which will blossom beautifully in time, with care and the right approach 🏵 🏵
I'd love to hear from you, whether you are starting out in business or if you are more established and need help managing and understanding your figures.

This week I was selected by my accountancy body for CPD monitoring. In common with most professional organisations, accountants and bookkeepers have to maintain records of the activities they undertake throughout the year to maintain their knowledge.

Luckily it only took me a couple of hours to put together all the records in the corect format. I've been to training events on company accounts and finance regulations and running my practice, I've done loads of webinars on VAT, sole traders, expenses and capital allowances. I've read articles on technical issues to do with payroll, CIS, cashflow and the Next Big Thing - Making Tax Digital.

The AAT is quite strict on CPD, particularly for its licensed accounts and bookkeepers, as it helps to maintain public confidence in the profession. But what I found from the exercise is that it also gave me a lot of confidence in the services I provide - I hadn't realised how much time I had spent staying up to date and learning about new developments in the finance world.

If you’re VAT registered and your turnover is over £85,000 per year, you should be aware that HMRC’s Making Tax Digital project is going to affect the way you submit VAT returns from next April. In particular, if you currently use the HMRC website to type in and send VAT returns, this will no l...
