Has your company invested in new machinery or equipment and subsequently made a loss for corporation tax purposes?

You may be able to claim tax relief for the loss and potentially receive a corporation tax refund, helping to provide a valuable cash-flow boost for your business.

There are different options available, including:

• Carrying losses back to offset against previous profits and potentially generate a tax refund
• Carrying losses forward to offset against future profits
• Considering the timing of a claim and the corporation tax rates that apply

The most suitable option will depend on your company's individual circumstances, including previous and expected future profits.

If your business has made a loss or you’re considering significant capital investment, it’s worth understanding how the available tax reliefs could affect your cash flow.

What is the cost of waiting five years to start funding your pension?
Starting early could make a difference of more than £200,000 to your retirement.

If you started investing £500 a month at age 30, your pension pot could grow to approximately £715,917 by age 65.

But if you waited until age 35 to start, your pension pot could be worth around £504,769 by age 65.

Although you would have saved £30,000 by delaying your contributions for five years, you could end up with a pension pot that's £211,148 smaller.

Why? Because it's not just the contributions you miss out on during those first five years. It's also the potential investment growth those contributions could have generated over the following decades.

This is the power of compounding - and why the timing of your pension contributions can have such a significant impact on your financial future.

At Ward Goodman, our Financial Services team can help you understand your options and plan towards the retirement you want.

HMRC signs up MTD IT stragglers

If your combined gross turnover from self-employment and property businesses exceeded £50,000 for the 2024/25 tax year, you may already be required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD IT) from April 2026.

HMRC estimates that around 294,000 taxpayers have yet to sign up, so if you haven’t taken action yet, now is the time to check what’s required.

If you’re affected, you’ll need to:

• Sign up for Making Tax Digital
• Keep digital records
• Use compatible software to submit your information
• Make sure you’re meeting the relevant deadlines

If you’re unsure whether MTD applies to you or need help getting set up, the Ward Goodman team can help.

Can a property company still qualify for Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) if it also receives rental income?

A recent First-tier Tribunal case considered whether a company involved in preparatory property development activities could be treated as a trading company, despite also receiving rental income.

The case highlights the importance of looking at the nature and extent of a company’s activities, particularly where property development and letting activities overlap.

For business owners considering a future sale, understanding how BADR could apply is an important part of planning ahead.

If you’re considering selling your business or would like to discuss the potential tax implications, get in touch with the Ward Goodman team on 01202 875 900 or visit www.wardgoodman.co.uk/contact.

Could you be missing a valuable gifting opportunity?

When it comes to Inheritance Tax, many people know about the seven-year rule — but fewer are aware that certain regular gifts made from surplus income could be exempt from Inheritance Tax altogether.

In our latest blog, we explore the ‘normal expenditure out of income’ exemption, including:

• What the exemption means
• The conditions that need to be met
• Why keeping clear records is important
• How regular gifting could form part of your wider estate planning
• Why protecting your own financial security should always come first

With changes to the treatment of pensions for Inheritance Tax purposes expected from April 2027, now could be a good time to review how you plan to pass wealth on to the next generation.

We’re proud to see our very own Sophie Brown featured in Money Marketing!

Sophie shares her thoughts in the article, “PFS: Chasing the time savings, but at what cost?”, exploring the growing focus on time-saving technology and the importance of considering what might be lost along the way.

It’s fantastic to see Sophie contributing to the wider conversation within the financial planning profession and sharing her perspective on the importance of training and development within paraplanning and other roles without relying on technology for this.

Company car? Check the latest advisory fuel rates!

HMRC’s Advisory Fuel Rates (AFRs) are used by employers when calculating fuel costs for company cars, including business journeys in company vehicles.

The latest rates apply from 1 September 2026, so if you reimburse employees for business mileage or require them to repay fuel costs, it’s worth checking that you’re using the correct rates.

The appropriate rate depends on factors including:

• The fuel type
• The vehicle’s engine size
• Whether the journey is for business or private purposes

Using the correct advisory fuel rate can help ensure your company car fuel arrangements are dealt with appropriately for tax purposes.

If you need advice on company cars, employee benefits or business mileage, get in touch with Ward Goodman on 01202 875 900 or visit www.wardgoodman.co.uk/contact.
