Not every crack in a wall means subsidence.

Many are simply caused by plaster or mortar drying out over time. The cracks worth paying attention to are the ones that tell a bigger story.

Here are a few signs that could indicate ground movement:

• Cracks wider than 3 to 4mm (around the thickness of a 10p coin)

• Cracks that are wider at the top than the bottom

• Diagonal cracks running across a wall

• Cracks that run through the bricks themselves, not just the mortar

• Doors or windows that have suddenly started sticking or no longer close properly

On their own, these don't always mean subsidence. But if you notice several of these signs together, it's worth asking a builder or structural surveyor to take a look.

Catching the issue early can often prevent a much more expensive repair later.

One last thing that's often overlooked. Not every home insurance policy includes subsidence cover, particularly if your property is in a higher risk area or has a history of movement. It's always worth checking your policy before you need it.

A surprising number of small businesses are underinsured without knowing it.

A few gaps that catch people out:

Business interruption cover set too low for the time it really takes to get trading again stock insured at cost price rather than what it costs to replace a change of premises, or working from home, that the insurer was never told about public liability that has not kept pace as the business has grown

None of these show up until you claim, which is the worst possible moment to find out. Reading through your schedule once a year and checking it still matches what you actually do is a good habit.
